It is my understanding that the LEC (local exchange carrier) continues to control the caller ID information. In your case, even after porting the number to
Vonage
, the database is still maintained by the LEC.
Vonage
merely rents the numbers from the LEC.
If I were to call your number it would first hit the LEC (where the caller ID information is appended, and then transmitted to the CLEC, which is Vonages partner, then to
Vonage
, then to you.
That still does explain why no caller Id from your temporrary number, unless that block of numbers
Vonage
rents from the LEC would cost more if caller ID were enabled.

My incoming caller-ID has had the wrong name for about a month. I wish I could get it fixed because just giving me the city and state doesn't help me decide whether to answer the phone or not. It used to be right so I'd like to know what changed. When I sent an email they told me they pass on what they receive. Well, obviously, they're not getting the right information from their CLEC. They advertise "Caller-ID with name". That's a lie because they do not provide the name, only the number and the callers city.

Post subject: It **is** a problem with Vonage's Caller ID
I've been lurking this forum forever and every time this topic comes up a
Vonage
evangelist blames every single caller ID issue (I'm only talking about incoming Caller ID data here) on either the LEC (local exchange carrier) or the CLEC (the competitive local exchange carrier). I've used
Vonage
side-by-side with Verizon and other carriers and the incoming Caller ID data is much more complete with the other carriers for the same incoming calls/numbers -- **even** for mobile telephones! Verizon (local service), for instance will show name and number for both incoming Verizon and AT&T/Cingular mobile phone calls.
It seems to me that rather than getting better, Vonage's Caller ID information is getting progressively worse. Incoming landline calls that previously had name data associated with them no longer show that information.

This has been my experience as well over the last couple of months. I have a NY number (646) and while I never got much more than
wireless caller
for cell calls, land lines almost always gave me more to work with. Now, numbers in-state and out that used to show the persons name are only showing the number and area (if that.)
Something MUST have changed...

I have noticed the change with caller id over the past 2 months, but only for cell phones. Instead of the name and number like it showed for the past 4 years, it now shows NY Wireless, or VT wireless, etc.

Post subject: Problem Noted Here as well (Raleigh, NC)
I noticed during the past few days that Caller ID names no longer appear on any
Vonage
incoming calls. Tonight, I finally investigated more thoroughly. On one of my extension phones, I had not recently erased the incoming calls. Thus, I was able to use the history of incoming calls to pinpoint --- prior to and on March 31st, incoming calls reflected Caller ID info as usual. As of April 1st, it switched to showing only the city and state (landline) or "wireless" and state (cell), rather than the caller's name. The number continues to show. The same problem appears with both incoming cell and landline calls targetting my
Vonage
number.
Also, about an hour ago, I literally watched as the
Vonage
phone rang, yet my cell did not. I have that cell on SimulRing, so the cell *always* rings simultaneously with the
Vonage
house phones. That is, until tonight. This is what prompted me to stop everything and start investigating the situation in earnest.
I came to the forums specifically to see if others may be having similar problems. I'll check additional threads prior to contacting
Vonage
.
