PostPosted: Mon Mar 31, 2008 10:21 pm    Post subject: V-Portal QOS - Upload Saturation Problem Reply with quote Back to top

I'm no Voip or Router expert, but I do pretty much know what I'm doing with networking. I've been a very happy Vonage customer for 4 years now, but I just recently started using Amazon S3 for offsite (i.e. away from my house) backup of all my music, photos and other goodies. As soon as I started the massive upload (only 40Gb or so, but over a 600k DSL upload that seems pretty big) we found that folks we called couldn't hear us anymore (choppy in the extreme), inbound audio is fine - as you would expect.

Anyway, I ran out and bought a V-Portal hoping this would sort the problem out. I put the V-Portal between by DSL modem and my Airport Extreme basestation as instructed but no improvement in call quality with the upload active.

Do I have unrealistic expectations about what QoS in the V-Portal should be able to do? Have I set this thing up wrong somehow?

I'm pretty uncomfortable with the V-Portal between my DSL modem and my router anyway - is there a better way to do this?

Thanks for any help you guys can provide.

Ian

The Vportal is such a new device that I don't think the jury is in on the performance yet. However, Vonage all in one devices such as the Vportal, are supposed to ensure that voice packets receive priority over other packets when used as the primary router. There are devices called broadband boosters which sit after the modem and do a good job of prioritizing data traffic for your network. The most popular is the Hawking BB1. I've read some good things about it solving problems such as yours, both here and other forums. Dlink also makes one, but I haven't read much about the performance.

You are really burning the tires off your DSL connection though. Lol
That upload is going to take like 3.5 days.

How about the Linksys OGV200 Network Optimizer? It seems that the BB1 is hard to find these days.

Alternatively, is there another decent router (ideally without wireless, as I already have a pretty solid WiFi set up through the house) that I can stick between the DSL modem and the V-Portal and Airport (with one port each)?

I did already try a Linksys WAP4400N with the DSL Modem on the WAN side, my old Vonage phone adapter on LAN port 1 and my Airport on LAN port 2. I used the "port QoS" feature of the WAP4400N to prioritize port 1 over port 2, but it didn't make any difference, so I took it back to Best Buy. FYI - the machine that's the source of uploading all my data is connecting over WiFi to the Airport.
