I found this website last night, and I figured since you guys and gals are the experts I would come here with my questions.

So, I am moving out of my home in the month of May, and in search for a telephone service I have decided to go with Vonage. I am an IT tech, however Voip Is not exactly my "cup of tea"

I have been on Vonage's website and am interested in the V-Portal. However, I notice it has caller ID on the screen, If the telephones I have in my home have caller id will it show up on there screen as well? Or only on the V-Portal's screen?

Also, I have a question concerning the setup. The V-Portal has a built in router...what I would like to have is just my Wireless router, and have the V-Portal plug into one of the LAN ports, and if possible give it a static DHCP address. Is that possible? Or must I go from my Cable modem, to the V-Portal, and to my router?

Also, my internet will be Comcast HSI, with 6 megs down...and i'm not sure off the top of my head with the upload speed is that enough to handle a steady Voip line, as well as working from home, utilizing a VPN connection, as well as some bandwidth heavy applications? Also, how does online gaming, and downloading effect Voip quality?

Thank you for taking the time out of your day to assist me in any questions, and I hope to become a full member once I get my Vonage service in May.

Happy Easter

Interesting question. I'm almost certain that it will show up on your regular caller ID as well as on the V-portal. All other Vonage adapters to date emulate an ordinary phone line as closely as possible, including things like caller ID, and I haven't seen anyone complaining that the V-portal doesn't. On the other hand, I haven't specifically seen any mention of CID being received on phones plugged into the V-portal.

You can do it the way you want. I'm not sure what you mean by a static DHCP address, but you can plug the V-portal into another router, and you can set it for either static or DHCP addressing. You could also go with another Vonage box, like the VT2142, and do the same. If you were buying at retail, I'd suggest using a PAP2 or D-link VTA (adapters with no router) in your situation, but the V-portal from Vonage has a big rebate on it.

The upload speed is important, but, in general, a cable service with 6M down has plenty of upload capacity to run Vonage. Run the forum Voip speed test (Forum speed dial drop down menu) to see how yours is doing. The other things you mention definitely can affect quality. Always set QoS in your router to favor the Vonage box. Then Vonage may adversely affect those other things- there's no free bandwidth lunch. Vonage uses about 90 kbps when you're on a call, and a much lesser amount regularly when you're not.

Not much to add after Steve's reply but I would just like to touch on the QOS a little more. An advantage to putting the Vportal first is that it automatically gives QOS priority to your Vonage phone calls. So even if you were doing the other things that you mention, your calls should remain clear. Again, like Steve said, it could adversely affect your gaming or bit torrent etc. I don't think you mentioned the router you have now. If it is a pretty robust and fairly new router, it should have QOS settings that you can set up manually and like Steve mentioned, you should set it to favor the Vonage box.

You can also buy a "broadband booster" ,which when placed directly after the modem, automatically provides packet prioritization. There is one from Hawking called the BB1 and Dlink also makes one but I don't remember the model. Something to consider if you want your router to remain first and it doesn't have QOS settings.

One of the things I'm still waiting to hear about is the quality of the V-portal as a router. In the past, people in here, me included, have recommended putting a good router first and using QoS to favor the Vonage box. That's because all of the Vonage boxes in the past have proved to be a bit on the weak side as routers.

My hope is that Vonage has focused on making the V-Portal a really robust one-port router as well as a good phone adapter. If people start telling us that they've achieved that, it may be time to change how we answer this question.

I, too, am eager to hear if the V-Portal's QoS actually works. If so, it would be a first for the Vonage router line, but we can always hope...

QoS is one issue. I'm also concerned about its ability to simply pass high volume traffic through to the network behind it without going to pieces.

I have a Motorola VT2142 and found putting it first helped. I do not run bit torrents nor do I play WOW and other high bandwidth demand games. I do run periodic backups (total 10-12 times per day) of SQL server and other databases from various web servers, and have had no problems, so "perhaps" the QOS is helping. I also use other Voip services in addition to Vonage talk at the same time my wife uses the Vonage ATA (VT2142) enabled service with no issues, though I have set the VT2142 to optimize traffic for VT, Gizmo and FWD Voip services, and I am sure my set QOS is secondary to the regular QOS settings for Vonage traffic controlled by the ATA.

IF I were using torrents or WOW, my experience may be different, don't know.
