PostPosted: Thu Mar 20, 2008 7:20 am    Post subject: WRT54GS and Vportal; When Phone in Use, internet dies Reply with quote Back to top

The devices that are connected to the internet are as follows:
Linksys WRT54GS
Vonage VPortal wired into the Linksys
An IBM ThinkPad and MacBook Pro that are both connected via Wireless.

When the Vonage phone is in use, this happens:
I can see the Cable Modem lights sending and receiving heavily.
So heavily, that the IBM ThinkPad cannot ping google.co.uk.
However, the MacBook Pro CAN surf the internet and send and receive email while the Vonage is active. Very quick too.
Eek

This recently started happening from 2 or 3 days ago. I usually don't use the Vonage but my workmate does and she has been out for a week and just returned.
2 Things have changed that I know of.
1.) My workmate has a NEW MacBook Pro.
2.) As of Monday 17th or Tuesday 18th (can't remember exactly) an update was received on the Vonage Vportal and it rebooted and seemed to be fine. No errors.

This is the troubleshooting I have done so far:

I've done a speed test on the Internet. I used Speedtest.net.

I also looked for updates for the Linksys Router. This router is a V7. Apparantly it is a new version and have not heard of any issues with it. It has been on constantly for about 1 month. I Powercycled it and was rather cool as it sits by the window. No moisture that I can feel either.

I turned off all of the devices and turned them back on.

It still managed to cut off my bandwidth when the phone was used, only the IBM ThinkPad and once the Vonage device is in an idle state, I can use bandwidth again on the ThinkPad.

This is a very odd issue and don't know where to go with this. I am leaning toward a faulty update in the VPortal Device as nothing else makes sense. I am a heavy tech user and consider myself an expert whatever that means now - a - days.

If anyone has any advice or can direct me anywhere for help, Thank you in Advance.

Clay

access your advanced settings through easylink advisor and then go to wireless tab. change the channel to one. nothing can interfere with this channel so you dont worry about your phone messing everything up =)

I changed the Linksys to use channel 1 for wireless but this didn't make a difference. No surf still when the phone is in Use.

It's a wired Vonage Vportal. I don't even think it uses wireless, just Wired DHCP.

Hm..

No, my Vonage Vportal is not wireless. It can't be interfering with the wireless signal. There is no wireless signal coming from the Vportal.

This is what I have:

Name: Vonage - V-Portal Gateway and Router
Model: VDV21-VD
Link: Vonage - V-Portal Gateway and Router

This is how I have my network setup

Cable Modem
|
Linksys WTRG54GS Wireless Channel 1
| | |
IBM Laptop (wireless) / MacBookPro (wireless) / Vonage (wired)

Also, I have plugged my IBM in via Ethernet cable to the Linksys router while the Vonage was in use and still was unable to surf.

Well, I am still at a mystery but as of yesterday morning the problem is fixed.

There must have been an update come through on the Vonage Vportal while I was sleeping. I should have checked the Firmware at the time of the problem and the time that it was working, but I didn't.

Thanks for your help vla8806 anyways..
