I am in the process of transferring my home number for which I have had for over 20 yrs. to the Vonage service. For now, I have been very happy with the quality of the calls using the virtual number provided.

My question, if I leave Vonage in the future, will I be able to transfer my original number from Vonage to another service provider?

Thanks.

Love = Vonage

you shouldn't have a problem with that. many have transferred from pots to Voip back to pots or to a different Voip successfully including myself.

How long did your Voip to Voip LNP take? Some articles I've read in the trade rags suggested that such a port is nearly impossible, although I doubt that is entirely true.

plus loads of phone calls and emails.

now my number was originally verizon pots, to packet8 to Vonage. I think what you may be reading is transferring a Voip assigned number to another Voip (or anywhere). the problem there is the Voip company doesn't own the number they assign you, and by extension you are not the "customer of record" as they say, and therefore can't (or it's nearly impossible) to transfer it.

Actually, the article was referring to POTS->VoIP->VoIP. The author said to carefully evaluate Voip companies and do a trial period with them before you do an LNP, because supposedly once you port a POTS line to Voip, it's nearly impossible to get back.

I knew that didn't sound right. I'm suspicious of mainstream tech-press articles (PC Magazine, PC World, et al) anyway, because their authors are often journalists who know just enough about I.T. to be a danger to themselves and their readers.

Just found out my transfer was denied because the name or address doesn't match. Called SBC and the name and address they have in my record matches what I used to sign up to Vonage with. Even verified that they spelled the street right and my name right. I sent all this info back to Vonage so who knows what will happen now.

Only thing I can think of is abbreviations or zip+4. I always use Cv for Cove and thats how my Vonage account and SBC account says they are setup as. If SBC used Cove instead of Cv I'll be plenty pissed. The post office converts Cove and Trail to Cv in their system. Also, my bill from SBC has the +4. The record doesn't have +4. I didn't sign up with Vonage with a +4. +4 is NOT needed for anything and doesn't designate anything except for quicker sorting of mail. So that better not be it either. I don't have high confidence that this will get sorted out in a timely manner.

I just wanted to thank the person who originally posted the jeffrey.citron@vonage.com address here. After more than a month of waiting for my number transfer and a couple of disastrous attempts to have Vonage's customer service reps get to the bottom of the issue, I saw a post in this thread suggesting an e-mail be sent to Jeffrey Citron (CEO of Vonage).

Well, I did just that. A day later, I received a personal response from someone on the "Executive Response Team." He promised to get a resolution for me. The next day, the carrier approved my transfer and I now have a firm date for transfer completion.

Status:
December 16, 2004 Awaiting Letter of Authorization
December 17, 2004 Letter of Authorization (LOA) Received
December 17, 2004 Transfer Sent to Carrier
January 21, 2005 Carrier Approved Transfer

Vonage also offered to reimburse me for the overage I would be paying to my POTS service for having to maintain the service for more than 20 business days during the transfer process. A nice touch, I thought.
