I have v-portal and i am trying to set that up in India
I have DSL PPoEconnection. I have changed the my n/w configurations to DHCP
when I do ipconfig i can see that it is taking the ip of the portal i.e. 192.168.15.1
but I am not able to access the web UI
though I can successfully ping the v-portal at ip 192.168.15.1
I am not able to access the internet also through v-portal.
Earlier I could successfully connect to internet through V-portal through a different computer with the same settigns. But that computer is not available to me right now.
Sad

Thanks in advance.

The computer is getting the address 192.168.15.1?? That should be the address assigned to the Vportal itself.

Is the phone working? Was it working when you had the other computer?

What address is being assigned to the computer, if any? Is the computer set to get its address dynamically (DHCP)? Do you know if the Vonage box is set up as a DHCP server?

The phone is not working right now. It was working when I had the other computer.
The ip assigned to the computer is 192.168.15.2. I have changed the computer settings to get it from DHCP. The Vonage was configured for DHCP. I have changed it to PPPoE using the other computer (since I can not connect from this computer.) Sad

Now I am able to connect to the WebUi usong a difference computer. But I am getting 008 error. For DSL users, check username and password. I have configured the V-Portal for PPPoE and I am using exactly the same username and password as in case of normal connection. I have changed the mac-id also in the Web-UI of V-portal. and selected the option of mac-cloning allowed.
I am clueless about why I am getting this exception.

So basically, if I understand you, the V-portal was working and giving both phone service and internet service with the old computer. Then you changed computers and both the phone service and internet service stopped.

There has to be more to it than that. The phone service provided by the V-portal does not depend on the computer in any way once you have it set up, and you did. Something must have gotten changed. Error 8 on the V-portal means that it's unhappy with the DSL setup, and the fact that one computer can connect to the setup page and the other can't means you've got some sort of problem there as well.

I'd start by disconnecting the V-portal from the DSL service completely. Do a master reset on it using the reset button. Then go over the network settings on your computer carefully, paying particular attention to having it set up for DHCP. You may want to refer to the settings on the computer that works as a help in this. Don't stop this investigation until you can plug the new computer into the V-portal LAN port and access the setup page.

Once you've got the V-portal and the computer talking, set up the WAN side of the V-portal for PPPoE using your name, password, and so forth. Only then should you plug it into the DSL service, reboot, and see if you can connect. You may need to do MAC cloning if your DSL modem or service requires that you only use one device with it.

I could be in over my head, but I think the issue is, since the other computer still has the correct PPoE settings, it properly authenticates to the DSL account and subsequently allows the vPortal to access the internet as well -- so in this case the phone and internet both work.

Switch to the other computer which no longer has the PPoE account info properly set up and it will only obtain an IP from the vPortal but since the DSL never authenticates without the necessary PPoE info neither the internet nor the phone service which is dependent upon it will work.

What has to be done if I am correct in my logic is that the vPortal needs to be setup with the proper PPoE credentials and then either of the two PC's can connect to the vPortal via DHCP and you will have internet and phone. One good way to check is if the PPoE info is set up correctly in the vPortal the Phone service will work irregardless of either computer.

I run into issues like this all the time here in the states and it is one of the main reasons why I HATE DSL, though more and more I am seeing DSL modems that have the PPoE info stored internally rather than being setup on the NIC in the PC. This is what you want to do with the vPortal since it is in effect acting as your gateway and thus needs to be the first and only device to authenticate to the DSL network.

Good post. I agree with you about DSL, and you may have hit the nail on the head with why the phone worked with one computer. I'm not sure if it explains Shona's 4th post, in which a computer is now working on the internet but the V-portal is getting error 8. Perhaps Shona changed the V-portal settings along the way.

In any case, I'd still approach the problem by getting the new computer to talk to the V-portal, and then configuring the V-portal to handle the DSL properly. If you're correct, the original setup was a disaster waiting to happen, and it did.
