What about using the Linksys WRT54GL with the Motorola VT2142RB adapter that Vonage is currently offering at no charge? I realize the Motorola device is also a router but can this be done. I'm trying to keep cost at a minimum here. |

Yes that will work. You should turn off DHCP in the Vonage router, but I use a similar confguration with a WRT54GL and a Vonage RT31P2.
I can't speak for the quality of the VT2142 as I've never used one before though. |

Let me guess. If I use the Linksys router you use I have to get the Vonage adapter as well? Right now I'm connected straight trough the Linksys RT31P2 router that came with Vonage activation. |
Are you happy with that setup? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. |

One more note that I just picked up on with tophtml's reply.
If you have a working RT31P2, just keep it, buy a WRT54GL and put Tomato on it. Then just disable DHCP on the RT31P2 and set it behind the GL.
I have this config and it works great.
My wireless is used for, my Wii, Apple TV, 1 desktop and 2 laptops located all over the house. |

What butterman said is true. Tomato is a great product and is one of the few fully functional third party firmwares which will support my hardware version of the Linksys WRT54GS. As a precaution, if one should choose to flash a third party firmware to an existing, NON-VONAGE, router, make sure to follow the instructions TO-THE-LETTER to prevent bricking it. |

If your existing, out-of-the-box setup is working, don't change it and you won't have to learn any more about networking or the products involved to tweak networks. If I don't understand a term, i consult the Google search engine and learn about it. Most importantly, If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Google offers the gateway to a free, practical, education.

So glad I took the time to try and help.
Tomato is firmware, which I mentioned in a previous post. If you didn't understand all you have to do is ask (asking nicely is a plus since we are trying to help you... its not like any of us work for Vonage)
Do a google search on "Tomato Firmware" to find out more. |
