All,

My parents have BSNL service. ADSL Modem is MT841. They are having tough time to get Vonage working

(well..to add..it was working until last month. They recently took the unlimited plan. God knows what the service guy did,
it screwed up Vonage setup and only internet is working)

So here is the deal. My parents live in Hyderabad and if anyone is willing to help them for a fee.

Details
-------

1) Config setup

Computer --------> |ADSL Modem| <---------- Vonage (RTP300)

I want computer and Vonage connect directly to ADSL modem (NOT computer --> Vonage --> ADSL)

2) As of now, Computer --> ADSL is working. (I have made my parents enter pppoe user/password in ADSL router so that they dont have to enter everytime in PC)

3) Comptuer has got static IP (192.168.3.1)
4) In Vonage (192.168.15.1) also, I made them Select connection type as PPPOE, enter user/password and click save.
But when they click on "Status" tab in Vonage adapter, it keeps popping up message box saying "Unable to reach pppoe server"

May be they have to enter hostname or something.

I thought instead of spending $$ on calling cards ( I already spent 7hrs on this on calling card already) I could actually pay someone to get this done.

Please let me know if anyone is willing to help.

Why? Computer-->Vonage-->ADSL would be the normal setup. If the ADSL modem is a combination modem/router, then you can do what you want, and the PPPoE/Password settings should be set up in the modem. The modem/router should be set up as a DHCP server for the computer and Vonage box, both of which should be set for dynamic IP.

If the DSL modem is not also a router, then I don't think you can do it the way you want. If you are connecting the Vonage box and computer to the modem using a switch, and expect each to log on to the DSL service independently, your ISP may not permit that. Maybe that's what has changed in the setup. If you leave the computer out of the setup, will the Vonage service work then?

What Vonage box do you have? What modem?

Folks,
I am planning to have a Voip setup for my people in Hyderabad.
I am planning to visit them soon.

What equipment do I buy here in US and what kind of plan should I sign up for with Vonage ?

Any help is appreciated.

The plan depends on your needs. If you need less than 500 minutes per month, then the basic 500 minute plan for $15 is good. If you need a lot more, then the unlimited plan for $25 is best.

Which equipment you should buy depends on what they have now. If they already have a good router with QoS control and an available ethernet LAN port, then get a PAP2 or Dlink VTA. If they don't have a router, then a combination router/adapter may be best. The Motorola VT2442 or VT2142 would be good choices. The V-Portal may be the right choice, but I haven't seen enough on it to be convinced yet.

Whatever you buy, you should test it here first. Also, have them run the forum Voip speed test (Forum speed dial drop down menu) to see how their service is doing. Also keep in mind that technically Vonage does not support or even allow what you're doing, even though a lot of people do it.

A lot depends on what service they will use in India. Most services I have seen posted on this forum use DSL wth PPOoE. Some require a borwser login, some simply need a signon within the Vonage router.

Many need to clone their MAC addresses from their computer that they first established connection with. Search this forum for "India" and the service name you will use.
