I just bought a Vonage connection with the V-Portal router for my girlfriend who has moved to Switzerland.

Her current setup is:
ISP Modem (which includes a wifi router) -> V-Portal -> Phone

However, it's been impossible to get it to work. First, there would be numerous error messages on the V-Portal screen indicating "wrong phone line". After 10+ hours on the phone with Vonage Support, they've got it down to getting a dialtone at least on the phone.

But now, there's a constant message in the background with a voice going "Phone may be plugged into the incorrect phone port. please try the other port" and then a busy tone - All the while, we can talk in the foreground. Error code 007 is displayed on the V-Portal screen.
The ISP modem's firewall has been shut off, all connecting wires have been double-checked etc..

Vonage appears to be completely baffled, and we are getting frustrated since every day we cannot have a conversation and are shelling out money for the service.

Does any one have suggestions/ideas to resolve this? All help would be appreciated!

Take a look at the telephone cord you are using and make sure that it has only two pins in the connector, and not 4. If it has 4, switch to a different telephone cord and try again.

Thanks for the tip! Definitely sounds like an interesting solution.

I passed on your message to the lady, and here's what happens:

She was using a 4-pin cable, as you predicted. She found a 2-pin cable lying around and tried using that.
However, now she doesn't even get a dial tone - Swiss phones don't use 2-pin cables. Or so she feels.

Does that sound right? If so, are there 4->2 converters available that I could get her? Or a different phone that might accept the 2-pin cable?

Also, after exhausting every option with Vonage, she's being shipped a new modem (the Motorola V2142, via me) hoping that the current modem is just a bad-piece and that is the problem.

I don't know about Swiss phones and the cables, but the thrust of Trekologer's idea is that most ordinary, single line phones only use a single pair (2 wires) even though the RJ11 connector supports 2 pairs, and many phone cables carry all 4 wires. If the phone/cable combination is somehow causing the two lines that are available from the V-portal to both get connected to the phone, that would explain the operational phone with the error message overlaid. Hence Trekologer's suggestion to eliminate one pair in the cable (or so I surmise).

I suspect that the wiring of Swiss phones is different, and that going to the single-pair cable broke both the undesired cross-connect and the desired connection at the same time. My solution would be to go back to the 4 conductor cable. Cut it in half and isolate the center two conductors (usually red and green) in the half plugged into the Vonage box. Now consult with someone over there and find out which conductors are the ones used by the Swiss phone (or check the internet?). Connect those two from the phone half of the cable to the ones you isolated in the Vonage half and you may be good to go.

Of course, if you're sending her a new Vonage box, you could include an American phone.

Thanks for the insight Steve!

After some googling, I *feel* this might be the issue at hand with the 2-pin vs 4-pin cable.

Wikipedia also notes that Switzerland still uses the "Reichle" 4-pin cables as opposed to the RJ-11s.

I can't have her splice the cabling since she has no idea how to go about doing that. The few options are these:
1) Go to a hardware/electronics store and see if they sell adapters/converters for 2-pin->Reichle.

2) Failing the above, I will probably ship her a cheap phone from here and keep my fingers crossed that it works.

If you guys know of any store/website that might sell adapters, would be a lot of help!
