PostPosted: Fri Mar 07, 2008 11:36 am    Post subject: Bandwidth required for using 2 Vonage lines simultaneously? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all... considering a second line with Vonage and am curious if others who have done this can provide me input on what bandwidth is required/recommended to allow for two lines to be used at the same time (or if it's just not a good idea).

Thanks.

Try going here and running a test and posting your results:
http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/
They will tell you how many lines you are supposed to be able to support, and a bunch of other handy info to boot. Very Happy

Sorry for the long delay in responding... DSL just got put in so I could actually do the test. I ran the test, and didn't see where in the results it tells you how many lines you can support. Sorry if I'm being dense... but can you point me to where in the results that would be indicated?

The only part of the test that didn't work was the QOS test... (said it couldn't be determined)... Murphy's Law would tell me that this is where it estimates how many lines can be supported? Smile

Never mind... Sure enough, I reran it and it gave me the number of lines supported at 4. All set here! Thank you.

If it is telling the truth then 4 lines is marginal indeed.

But who can say if you won't post your results Question

Sorry about that... here are the results... Funny, I thought 4 lines sounded pretty good... I have a 6MBPS DSL line (~700kbps upload)... are these results sub par for that speed of connection?

Well, here are mine. See if you see any difference.

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 15098152 bps
Upload speed: 15282040 bps
Quality of service: 97 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket

Number of supported Voip lines: 93
Estimated MOS score: 4.2

Now granted my upload speed is high, higher than it used to be before I upgraded plans, but I used to get the same results with only 2 Megs upload speed, though I suppose not the same # of supported lines -- though I find this number hard to believe anyway.

Funny about it not filling in your QoS though. Unless it was so low it blew it off. It isn't reading your d/l speed correctly -- or your ISP isn't up to speed....

Then too, according to that ramp on that test site your up speed is a bit low for Voip. It doesn't start to show any green until you get to 1 Meg.

Your average round-trip time must make it sound like 2 tin cans and string. (I didn't make that up, btw. You can go to this other site and get your MOS number and they may test you and give you that sort or rating.)

http://www.testyourvoip.com/

Give it a try and let us know, ok?

But I would look into a higher-speed plan if available and if not a better router? Just guessing here, since you didn't give us any of the required information as listed in the sticky on the home page. Rolling Eyes

There's also a device you can get to prioritize your Voip traffic if necessary.

Your average round trip time is horrible. You wouldn't get Voip to work if that is what you are getting consistently. Also, your download is quite low compared to what you are paying for. Not even 4Mbps and you pay for 6Mbps. I would re run a few tests and see if it improves.

Yeah, and maybe call his ISP's tech support and have them troubleshoot his connection. He could have a kinked cable, bad device or who knows wihat.

Once with my Verizon fiber I noticed my up speed had tanked, called tech support and they pinged me from their end and said I had a bad gateway. Whoever his ISP is they should be able to do some diagnostics from their end, whoever they are.......... Question

Say, this guy isn't from India is he? Lol (inside joke, folks)

I mean after all, here we are trying to jump in here and help this guy while he continues to disregard the forum rules regarding posting where he is, the name of his ISP, and all that etc... Sad

Perhaps we need to explain that we don't work for Vonage. There may be one or more actual Vonage wolves among us sheep -- I suspect one at least -- but we don't collect money from Vonage.

They collect it from us Exclamation

We're just customers like y'all, folks. How about a little consideration?

Arthur... I fully realize you guys do not work for Vonage and am very appreciative for the help that you've already provided me.

Your line saying "I continuously disregard the rules of the forum..." seems a bit over the top to me though. I had posted all of one time before this question was raised... so I assure you, what I did was not intentional, I'm just new here.

If you look back to my first post, the question I raised was a request for generic information... not specific to my situation. You helpfully pointed me to a test I could run (thanks)...

I followed your advice, ran the test, and from there the discussion became much more technical. I just now read your last response asking me to post more information and read the rules in the sticky, which I am about to do.

I'm sorry if I wasted your time thus far... I'll reread the sticky and post the required information. Thank you for pointing me to it.
