Sometimes all the phones in the house work; other times with no apparent reason.........no dial tones on any of them; not even the phone connected to the modem thru a splitter. When I pull it from the wall the modem connected phone (with the splitter) works fine. I will try of the next few days to reconnect it to the wall and eventually they will all work again. I have tried the cable and phone modem power faiil sequence; different splitters; different wall jacks; even tried unplugging all the phones in the house but for the modem phone and still no luck. The only feeble connection there seems to be is when the weather gets real cold. Like this morning it was very cold; phones n.g.; but got milder later on in th afternoon and bingo alll the phones worked again. It's been driving me nuts; perhaps gremlins at work. Look fwd to any and all suggestions. tech support has been out twice with no solution except to suggest a short in the house wiring. Did nothing to try to track a possible short; yet the phones continued to behave erractically as described above.

If you have a short in the wiring, most of the Vonage boxes will indicate an off-hook condition even though all the phones are on-hook. It's indicated by the phone light flashing. I don't know whether the V-portal has an off-hook indicator.

Also, keep in mind that a phone that is bad or is actually off-hook can cause this problem. Start by unplugging everything on the home wiring except for one telephone that you're using to test things.

There's another odd symptom where sometimes the 'phone' light is illuminated and blinks when off hook. Yet sometimes as in right now there are no phone lights on and all phones in the system are working OK. The phone light condition has nothing to do with the house phones working or not as I have seen the system working OK with phone light on; and as now, phone light off and all working OK.

Which box do you have? The VT2442 has a known firmware problem with the phone light sometimes being off when the system is working. However, if the light is on and you pick up the phone, it does flash. At least it always does with mine.

My modem is the VT2442 and when the phone lite is working, it will flash on off hook. It was 26 degrees last nite and the house phones quit last nite and continued that way into today although it has warmed to 55. I guess I'll keep trying to plug the wall jack in to enable the house phones until it decides to work again. Really frustating; the cold temp seems to be the only suspect albeit a somewhat bizarre one.

The VT2442 will tell you with an audible message when you pick up the phone if it has lost connection to the internet and/or Vonage with a message such as "Your Vonage device cannot connect to the Vonage network...". If you're not getting this message then one of three things is happening:

1. the device is powered off

2. the device sees the phone off hook (and has been so for a while)

3. the device has detected a fault (resistance, EMF, hazardous voltage) present on what's connected to your phone port and turned off the analog phone circuitry to protect itself from damage (you'll see the phone light flashing bright red if this is the case)


Most likely you're looking at #2 based on your description. If it seems to happen more often with colder temperatures then you probablly have physical exposure or damage to your telephone wiring that is exposed to the elements. Finding the location might be hard. Make sure that the demarcation point at your telephone network interface unit is disconnected and you might want to wrap electrical tape over the cord end(s) in there.

Sib, when the house wiring is not working but the phone light on the VT2442 is working correctly, does the light flash when you plug into the house wiring?
