Hi Everybody,

I didn't want to hijack a new thread with my problem so I've started a new one. I've been with Vonage for 1 week now and started experiencing problems over the last two days.

Before getting into the issues, here is the info on my setup:

1. Loc: San Francisco Bay Area
2. ISP Provider service Type: SBC (now AT&T) DSL
3. Modem: SpeedStream 4100
4. Vonage Device: V Portal VDV21-VD
5. Setup: Modem->Vportal->wireless router

Speed test statistics
Download speed: 893320 bps
Upload speed: 437104 bps
Quality of service: 24 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 444 ms
Average download pause: 14 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 94 ms
Average round trip time to server: 1081 ms

Voip test statistics

For the last two days, the V portal keeps restarting for no apparent reason. From the day I installed my Vonage adapter, it's been flashing the message "updating firmware do not disconnect or restart" I figured this would take at most a few hours and left the V-portal one for a week now. It keeps displaying the firmware update message and now is experiencing the frequent restarts.

The V-portal is set up with the PPoE while my wireless rourter is DHCP and obtains IP dynamically. I've tried just hooking straight into the modem and the internet works fine. I've also tried the modem/router setup and it works fine, so I'm convinced that the problem lies within the v-portal itself.

Could anyone shed some light on this issue? Thanks a lot!

I'm afraid you have a couple of problems here. First, your test results are pretty bad- very long download pause, extremely long average turnaround time, and 100% packet loss, server to you. It's a wonder that it works at all. On top of that, you have the issue of the constant firmware update that never completes.

Start by investigating the test results. Configure a computer so that it can plug directly into the modem without any of your other equipment. Repeat the test and see how it looks. If it's still bad, then you have an issue to discuss with your ISP. If that fixes it, start adding equipment back into the mix until you see where the problem is.

In parallel with that, you'll need to call Vonage and work the firmware issue. That definitely needs to be fixed.
