What you're doing should work. Are you using the same cord to make the connection to the fax/modem that you're using with the phone? If not, you may have a bad cord.

Many fax/modems have an input jack to connect to the phone service and another for plugging in a telephone. Are you sure that you've plugged into the correct one? Assuming that your modem has two phone ports, if you plug the Vonage adapter into the input port and a phone into the output port, does the phone work even though the modem doesn't?

It's nice to see the post back on track Very Happy This question is directed to the people at Vonage because it makes no sense to me, so I figure I must be missing something.

I have Windows xp pro and a Linksys PAP2 phone adapter. I have been able to fax for months using windows fax program and now I cannot. It says "no dial tone". I have tried multiple computers thinking it might be the modem and there have been no hardware configurations or changes since it was working.

I spoke with Technical support (which should be trained that if you can't figure something out, you should escalate it to the next level. Oh well does not cut it!) and they had informed me that they did a firmware upgrade on the linksys. He said he would try making some changes and I should reset and try again but still no joy.

Is there another phone adapter that Vonage users can use or is it a setting that Vonage sets up? It was suggested that I hook up a Telegram Machine...I mean fax machine Very Happy but I am leary to buy one and have that not work as well.

The hand shake thing sounds like it may be it but why the change all of a sudden and why can't my firmware be reverted back to when it was working fine. I was told that users could not log into the phone adapters and they did it. It should be like routers that you can load whatever firmware works for you.The firmware upgrade is not an improvement if things stop working.

Any input on the ISSUE would be appreciated and if I forgot to mention anything please don't hesitate to let me know.

Thanks all Very Happy

I have the RTP300 and have used modem and fax through it. I think it's a little slower than I would normally get on a POTS connection, but it works adequatly.

One thing I'm not clear on is why Vonage sells a $9.99 dedicated fax connection. Why is this neccessary?

Thank you I am going to look into the RTP300. Did it come when you got hooked up or did you buy it separately? I just can't figure out why mine would work for 9 months then all of a sudden nothing.

Thanks again=)

Steve,
Unless I'm mistaken, I think he was referring to a PC fax modem (my situation as well), in which case there is only one rg11 (pots) port.

Your situation defintely gives hope on the whole matter. So it would seem, it was offered, and possibly a firmware upgrade caused the malfuntion. Suupper. I'm thinking that they WANT us to purchase a fax machine, which is an extreme waste in my book. IMO, so is buying another router (rtp300) that I defintely don't need. Combine that with Vonage doing firmware upgrades as they wish and I'm defintely not a new customer "happy camper". I actually though about purchasing the wrtp54 g at first (rather than the pap2) but I read horror stories (by disgruntled) compounded by the fact that LinkSys doesn't provide any support (firmware) to the device. I also didn't want to be locked into a certain router as I'd like to upgrade to the official "N" spec when it hits shelves.

So instead, I have ac adapters everywhere (2 wireless vtecs, and pap2). I'd be interested in that one stellar device that combines dsl modem, Voip, NAT and SPI router, and wireless g, vpn client, loads of configuration, firmware updates when problems are found, and an intiuitive interface. Mehh, that is neither here nor there for this thread.

Here's to a workable pc/fax modem. BTW, I don't think the rtp300 would work as that's the router I tested the pc-fax modem on in the first place (we have a rtp300 at work and a pap2 at home).

You may be right. The fax modem in my old computer has two RG11s, but the modem in my newer computer has only one.

Interesting. I never knew modems came with two before.

I read somewhere that there was a setting in the driver (device manager) that may allow us to overcome this issue (forget what the exact setting was) but the only configurable toggle i have pertinent to this situation is for my modem to wait for dial tone. I've tried both (on my laptop) connected to an active rtp300 port to no avail.

This is really a bummer, because for some, a physical fax box is such an unneeded device. Well, I guess in our present scenario it IS needed (thus far) so I digress.

Is there any actual Vonage associates that would like to ring in on this?

I am just kind of cheesed that it worked for so long then now nothing. The best answer I get from tech support is "oh well and your lucky it worked as long as it did" That's not support.

How about figuring it out and making the proper adjustments so your customers (people paying for the service....remember) don't have to spend all day trying to figure out why your service isn't working.

If it's the case of upgrading firmware to get people to buy the extra line then say so, but I am not buying an extra line to go through that tech support nightmare again.

Any help here VONAGE????

I feel your pain. It seems everytime you call, India has the kung fu grip. One time I actually got a very knowledgable New Yorka' (or at least sounded like... not the atypical wannabe British accent that seems to be the rave now).

Really makes me wonder how long before Vonage is bought out by SBC or Verizon. Not long now, for better or for worse :/
