V-Portal vs Dlink?

Hi,

I am about to sign up for Vonage and was curious as to a community recommendation on selecting the V-Portal vs the D-Link.

I have a great router already and plan to put the Vonage box behind the router (and use the router for prioritizing for voice) -- unless there is some incredible reason not to. I am also interested in keeping options open in case Vonage turns out not to be the best...

I am leaning towards the V-Portal with its new feature set, but I am wondering what others out there think.

Very interested in the same question. I can't tell from the website, and I've tried live chat with Vonage several times and the answer was never clear.

Hi,

I had the Linksys PAP2 as my Vonage phone adapter for more than 4 years. Except for some occasional audio drop outs that were certainly due to internet traffic issues, the device performed flawlessly for all this time. I always used it behind my good old MN-700 router.

Recently, I had the opportunity to get the V-Portal for the introductory price and decided to jump in. For 10$, you get a decent single-port router and phone adapter combined in a single box. The external UI is interesting and the integrated diagnostics makes the device attractive. My original plan was to use the V-Portal immediately behind my cable modem in order to give priority to the phone packets. The V-Portal would also act as the primary DHCP server and the MN-700 would only provide WiFi access and switching.

Meanwhile, the V-Portal is still young and I beleive there are still some minor issues with the firmware. Like some other people, I experience occasional internet connection problems. Basically, there is a situation where the V-Portal loses its leased IP address and does not renew it. The cause seems to be unknown yet and, like other people, I am trying get more information about this problem.

It is important to note that when I installed the V-Portal behind the MN-700 (where the MN-700 is the DHCP server), the problem stated above does not occur and the V-Portal works perfectly.

Aside this problem, the V-Portal is in fact a very nice device. The router features and configuration options are very interesting.
