PostPosted: Sun Feb 17, 2008 6:15 am    Post subject: Caller ID no longer working after doing whole home wiring Reply with quote Back to top

Hey all, new member with a problem here. I followed the steps to wire my whole home with Voip so that I can use the existing phone jacks in the house, but now for some reason my caller ID isn't working. Stranger still is the fact that call waiting caller ID works just fine! If you're on the phone and someone else calls, you see their number, but otherwise, nothing. Not even in the call logs. The phones I'm using worked fine with caller ID when hooked directly up to the Voip adapter, only stopped working after I redid everything so I could use the existing phone jacks. Any help you guys could offer would be appreciated. Thanks

Here is a checklist from AT&T about troubleshooting Caller ID, some may apply to you:

I would suggest....going back and reseating all the cable connections....and also recheck cable locations....just to make sure they are correct....If you have any replacement cables use them....just to rule out any bad cables....

reboot the phone adapter....after any changes....

The fact that your Caller Waiting ID works while your normal doesn't isn't strange at all; the two methods of ID display are encoded differently.

Caller ID is transmitted via an analog encoding in the ring signal; this means that, were you to be able to 'listen' to the ring voltages, they would not sound unlike a 56k modem. The real question is- what could be responding to the Bell 202-encoded analog signals, but not the Call Waiting ID ones?

Check to make sure you don't have anything in between the phone and the wires (e.g. a repeater, amplifier, a switch device, a fax machine or 56k modem) which might not be Caller ID compatible. An easy way to test this is to connect all of your devices in a series using short wires you know have worked with the caller ID feature in the past.

It's also entirely possible that the noise levels on the line (due to the length of lack of quality of you wires) are affecting the analog signal that carries the Caller ID name and number, especially if they're older or longer wires. Try the wires one at a time, and make modifications to your network if necessary.

Which Vonage box do you have? Some, like the RTP300, have had problems with CID that are sensitive to the type of wiring, number of phones on the system, etc.

Does it work again if you disconnect from the home wiring?

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I'm afraid I've been out of town and not home to check on the equipment. My mum couldn't figure out what box it was (it's kinda pinned under the desk, so it's hard for her to see the model number), but she was able to unplug it from the wall and back into the phone directly, and sure enough, the called ID works fine. Strange eh?

I'm thinking it must be a wiring thing. Now everything is seated properly, because only the red and green wires as indicated in the whole home wiring guides found online had been disconnected to make the internal home network. I haven't touched anything else. The called ID worked when I had the Bell landline.

Now there is a fax machine on the line (which also doesn't work, but that's a different topic), but it is part of an all-in-one printer, so isn't on all the time, unless I activate it. I dunno what's going on here!

Are you absolutely sure that you are disconnected from the landline? If the landline is inactive, but you're still connected to it, it could possibly cause the problem that you're seeing.

You might also try unplugging everything connected to your phone lines except for one phone, and seeing if that changes anything.
