PostPosted: Thu Feb 14, 2008 5:17 pm    Post subject: My voice is dropping for other party -QOS is POS Reply with quote Back to top

I've had Vonage for a couple of years now. No problems, but two weeks ago I moved five blocks and had Comcast wire up the house. The speeds seem good but the QOS measure is HORRIBLE (sub 50%)

And folks on the other end of the line seem to have difficulty hearing me from time to time, everything from static to voice just completely dropping. Could it be the QOS? And how does one get Comcast to fix that - they just look at up and down speeds that seem fine, so worried about the brush off and the $50 fee for calling when there is "no problem".

I did have one problem a while back (the other house) where the power levels were off on the modem, Comcast came by and fixed the splitter and all was well. Not sure what the proper power levels and noise levels should be on this Arris 502G, - so I've attached that data at the bottom too (you get to it by typing http://192.168.100.1/cm_state.htm into your browser). Can people give me a sense as to whether these modem specs are off or look reasonable.

I also upped the quality with the bandwidth saver. Don't know if this helps (grabs more bandwidth) or hurts (needs more bandwidth, so is more fragile).

I'm even contemplating going back to horrible old land-lines just to get decent reliability. Thanks again for any help.

George

Modem goes to wrt54g linksys router, which then goes to Vonage box. I run my pc and mac off of the wireless part of it.

What concerns me on your speed test is the dropped packets. That is the cause of the poor sound quality. Cable modem is so unpredictable i have no answer on what the line levels should be. To rule out your router maybe take it out of the loop just for testing. Plug your pc directly to your cable modem and re run the test to see if the result is the same. if it is you would have a good argument for Comcast to come out and check things out. If it's better then you can then point your attention to the router and maybe it could be defective. Hope this helps.

Thanks Alan. I missed that completely. So the server packet drops are 100% it says - so that means nothing is getting through?? That seems so extreme, that perhaps I'm mis-reading this. What should a typical number be - I see there are numbers for both the Server end and the You end - should these be similar? Are they the same importance?

I just reran, and now packet drop is 0% but QOS was unmeasurable. Which doesn't seem good.....

Thanks for the thoughts

I agree with Alan. Those test scores indicate a real problem. What happens to the test scores if you remove the Linksys router and plug a computer directly into the modem?

Is there a cordless phone involved in this? 2.4 GHz cordless phones and wireless routers make for problems.

There is a wireless router. I've run the test again because I don't think the packet drop is typical, although the QOS being so low is standard it seems. When I look at the graph, the little red line indicating delay shoots to the top from time to time - can post a picture somehow in these posts to show you guys?

I do have a cordless, but its a 5.8Ghz, so hopefully misses the band.

So the cable wire, goes to the cable modem, then there is wire to the router, then there is a wire to the Vonage box. The PCs rely on the wireless connection.

I can certainly connect the wire straight from the modem to the Vonage box, but then I can't access the internet - because there's only a phone out socket, not a pass through ethernet sockeet, right? So I can't run diagnostics - so I'm not sure how to report if there has been progress or not. I'm probably missing something here, so I'd love to hear it.

This probably means nothing, but I notice that people can't hear me, and my upstream freq/power is 50dBmV. But I can hear others, and my downstream freq/power is -3dmV. Is that a coincidence?

Thanks again for all your help guys. Really appreciated, as this is driving me (and my clients) batty!
Cheers
George
