PostPosted: Fri Feb 08, 2008 1:43 pm    Post subject: V-Portal Problems with Router Reply with quote Back to top

Is there anyone out there who is having intermittant (i.e. ocassional) problems with a v-portal attached to a router?
Points to consider:
1. I am currently using a d-link dir-655 (although I purchased a linksys wrt-330N, and got the same issues)
2. configuration:
modem -> v-portal -> router
dlink switch -> router
wireless & wired clients
X10 and Dlink dsm-520 (wired attached)

Everything hooks up ok., and seems to work for a while. Then it seemd to require a reset of the router to get working.

The way I understand this is:

modem -> v-portal -> router1 > dlink switch -> router2

I assume the v-portal and the two routers are all set to assign IP's via DHCP.

What are the DHCP confiurations for each (Start and End IP)?

Do you have any static IP's set?

Are you using home wiring? If so, you'll want to look at this thread:

Actually in order to simplify things, I took out the dlink swicth, so my config is as follows:
Modem ->v-portal ->router
1. I do not have any static ip's set
2. range is: 192.168.0.1 (which is the dlink router) to 192.168.0.199
3. it always seem to happen when I turn on the wireless radio, and get wireless clients (I have 2 in the house).

I was thinking that you miught be overlapping your IP address assignments with the 2-3 DHCP's, causing a conflict. I presume that the Vonage device is on anoher subnet, like 192.168.15.1, etc. while your router and the attahed PC's are on 192.168.0.1. If not, they should be on a diferent subnet than the Vonage device.

Yes, the Vonage device is at 192.168.15.1 (I haven't changed it, that's the standard config).
Why would adding a new wireless client cause a conflict in the router?
By the way, the symptom on the router is that I can't even get to it!
(I have to do a complete reset.)

The conflict I was speaking of is that if a client has the same IP address assigned to it as another client or device, the network will go down. However, with no static adresses assigned or if you do not have two DHCP's operating in the same range, the single DHCP should not let this happen, and probably is not.

When you are connected, on each machine, go to the cmd prompt (old DOS prompt) - (start/run/cmd) and type ipconfig /all

Doing so on each machine will give you the IP of that machine, if DHCP is enabled (should be), the default gateway, the DHCP server address, and the DNS server address.

In your case the default gateway should be 192.168.0.1, the IP address should be 192.168.0.xxx, DHCP server address should be 192.168.0.1, DNS server address should be 192.168.15.1.

Be sure all of the IP adresses of the machines are uinque.

Lastly, wireless intereference does some strange things (from 2.4 ghz phones or other devices), but I have not heard of it locking up a router.

One thing you may try is setting the router channel from auto to channel 11. If the problem persists, try channel 1. This is a shot in the dark, but can't hurt.

Does anyone know why the following log entries were made on my router (DIR 655)?
NFO] Mon Feb 11 13:42:11 2008 Blocked incoming UDP packet from 192.168.15.1:1901 to 192.168.15.2:1212

I believe that the V-Portal has the address of 192.168.15.1.
What is 192.168.15.2? That is not mentioned in my list of clients?

UDP port 1901 uses the Datagram Protocol, a communications protocol for the Internet network layer, transport layer, and session layer.

192.168.15.2 would be your router (D Link) or PC attached to the Vonage router which is 192.168.15.1.
