PostPosted: Thu Feb 07, 2008 1:01 pm    Post subject: Can not connect using router Mot VT2442 Reply with quote Back to top

Information:

1. Your location: Mumbai, India
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) : Tata Indicom (VSNL) ; Cable
3. Upload and download speeds : 256 kbps
4. Modem make and model : NA (The internet provider connects the ethernet cable to the PC)
5. Type of Vonage adapter used: Mot VT2442
6. Setup of Network : ISP---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing : No Inetrnet connection
8. Run this Voip Test

The ISP has provided the ethernet cable which is generally connected to PC and a dialer where username and password is set.

To connect Vonage I connected the ethernet cable from ISP to Vonage adapter and another ethernet wire from adapter to PC.

Then by logging into adapter I set Wan configuration to PPPoE and set the username and password.
If I try to set "Keep alive" field to 0 (as suggested in many posts); it throws error "check PPP errors" so I left it to default 10 min.

After this setting when I click on Connect the connection is not established and reason stated is "Authentication failed".

I have tried MAC address cloning but still I get the coonection failure.

Any suggestion on how to fix this issue?

thanks.

It sounds as if you've done the right things. Have you talked to your ISP? They probably wouldn't care about helping you to make Vonage work, but they should be willing to help you make a router work, and that's what the VT2442 is. Once it works as a router, the phone will probably work too.

Does your Vonage phone work?

I know that your computer will not b/c it has a dialer installed in it. You need to disable or remove it and make it get an ip address automatically.

Also make sure you have the correct protocol setup. Here I would call the ISP.

My Vonage phone does not work either.

My ISP is not willing to help me either with Vonage or the router. Only suggestion I received was to purchase Static IP from them.

So I will have to configure router to static IP. Only issue with it will be to keep the phone connected I will have to turn on the computer and connect to internet using dialer as I dont see the provision in the router to set static ip and username/pw in the same settings.

Thanks

A work around . . not great but should work.

Install another ethernet board in your PC and connect the Vonage device to it and enable internet sharing.

static ip would not require a username and password.

If there's an alternative to your ISP I would consider giving them a try; the one you have isn't earning your business. Assuming that's not an option, does your ISP offer their own routers? If so, getting that, and insisting on full information for hooking up network devices to it, might get you going.

Can you even use Voip with that sort of speed?

Good point on the speed, looks like ISDN service, not broadband.

And to think they tell you that you need a minimum of 90kbps upload to use Voip. No

I like to go to http://www.testyourvoip.com. They translate one's MOS into plain English. I bet if someone went there with 90kbps they would rate him 1.0 ("Forget the phone, try pony express").

I wonder what they would tell this person...
Maybe "Tin cans and string"?

Like Steve said, he needs to find a better ISP.
