PostPosted: Wed Feb 06, 2008 7:03 pm    Post subject: Using Call Hunt feature on forwarded calls Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all! I'm hoping someone will have some insight into using the Call Forwarding and Call Hunt features in conjunction with calls forwarded from another provider to a Vonage line.

Our business is trying to expand our total number of lines by keeping 2 BellSouth land lines and adding 6 Vonage lines to that. We use the BS lines as our first two incoming lines, and have set up a Line Busy Call Forwarding on our second BellSouth line so that when it's busy, all calls will be forwarded to our first Vonage line. From there, we want the Vonage lines to roll to one another using the Call Hunt feature.

Our configuration is:
BS1(when busy) -> V1, then (using Call Hunt):
V1 -> V2
V2 -> V3, etc.

However, on an incoming call, we currently get:
Call 1: BS -> V1
Call 2: BS -> V1, produces a busy signal rather than rolling to V2

Anyone know why the Call Hunt feature will not engage when V1 is busy?

Thanks!

I was having the same issue, but with 4 Vonage lines.
First thing to check, are your numbers finished being ported? if not, try using the virtual numbers in the hunt sequence. If they are ported, Try this:
First, disable EVERY feature on your Vonage side ( I'm assuming your BS forwarding is working), this includes voice mail, forwarding and call hunt. Then configure Voice mail - Enable V1 for voicemail, but leave V2 voicemail disabled. Configure call hunt : V1: if unanswered, go to V1 Voicemal. V2, second in list, go to V1 Voicemail if unanswered. Call your number with B1 and V1 in use, See if it goes to V2.

If your still having problems, Disable everything again on the Vonage side, and then take forwarding out of the equation to see if it is the culprit. Call Forwarding set up: V1 set to ring for ~ 10ish seconds, then forward to V2.
Voicemail setup: Disable Voicemail on V1 and set up V2 to go to voicemail if unanswered after at least 10ish seconds. Then Call your number with B1 and V1 in use.

If forwarding works, then you know that it's call hunt making your life unpalatable. If it doesn't, that means that V2 has an open, if it is indeed a busy signal. If you have a FAST busy, then it's a short in the line somewhere

What happens if you call the Vonage phone number (V1) that is first in the hunt sequence directly (not forwarded from your Bellsouth line) while V1 is in use? Does the call go to V2? If it does you may have an issue with Bellsouth. Are you sure they allow you to forward more than one concurrent call?

I think you have the answer right here. BS (such a fitting abbreviation BTW) doesn't work like Voip or call hunt, and these are not trunk lines. They (BS) are forwarding the call and keeping control of the call (billing you for the forwarded call) so when the second call comes in BS assumes both lines are busy.

I'm assuming you are using the Vonage lines as "in house" lines (not advertised, etc.) the BS lines are the ones people actually call, right? If this is the case you are pretty much screwed (at least for the set up you described). My suggestion would be to keep one BS line (if you are worried about stability) and use it as a network down number and port your other BS numbers to Vonage and set up call hunt how you want it. Actually I would advise another provider (if it were allowed by forum rules) and do lots more.

Yes, Call Hunt works fine when we dial our first number in the sequence directly. I also suspect it's a BellSouth issue, but wanted to cast a net to see if there's something within Vonage that we're missing.

I appreciate your input! Yep, you assume correctly. Our plan was to keep 2 BS lines as a safety net and let the Vonage lines deal with rollover and outgoing calls. The porting scenario you suggest is actually our latest brainstorm, too (I think we're on Plan F now.. heh.) Now we're looking at porting our main public number and having BS assign us one to replace it (to maintain the 2 safety net lines we want.)

Our concern now is timeframe b/c we're up against a big product launch late next week and anticipate a sharp upramp in incoming calls, so we need to get it all resolved ASAP.
