I've been a using the Motorola VT1000 adapter for 3.5 years now and have been having this issue for the past 18 months. I have already replaced my broadband modem (Motorola brand) but still continue to randomly lose my wan ip address on the VT1000 adapter.

For reference, I'm currently on Roadrunner cable broadband (was migrated from Comcast) and my connection is as follows:

Cable Modem=>Vongae VT1000 adapter=>SonicWall router=>16-port switch=> desktop / 802.11 Wifi access point=> laptop.

Typically, I power off the cable modem, Vonage adapter, and Sonicwall for about 10 minutes and power them back on at the same time to restore connectivity.

Has anyone ever seen this issue?

You should have your modem connected directly to the router, then connect the Vonage ATA to one of the ports in your router or the switch. In this case, make sure the Vonage box is not set up to function as a router. You can also try giving it a fixed IP in this setup. I have done it this way for years, first with the VTA1000 and later with a Vonage Dlink ATA, with no problems.

In other words, don't let your Vonage VT1000 sit between the cable modem and the router. It will only cause problems. From your description it is currently set up that way, which means you probably have two devices functioning as routers--which can lead to double nat and a host of other ills.

Thanks for the clarification Toolia. I didn't realize that the Vonage adapter was acting as a router (just assumed that it was a NAT-enabled switch). That being the case, I need to look at replacing my Sonicwall since it's just a one-armed router (only has a single input port and single output port).

Until then, I'll see if I can configure the Vonage adapter to stop acting as a router.

Since you already have a switch, technically there is no need to replace the router. The single port router plus switch will, in effect, be the same thing as a multi-port router. On the other hand, you might want to buy a fancier more configurable router, since they are pretty cheap these days.

In case you have lost it, you can find the manual at:

http://www.vonage.ca/media/pdf/VT1000_UserGuide.pdf

Over the years, and on many forums, many Vonage users have reported problems when the Vonage ATA is stuck between the modem and router. I once tried it that way as well, and suffered frequent disconnects.

The setup you should try is similar to that on page 5 of the manual. But since your router has just one port, you would be connecting all of the equipment, including the Motorola, to your switch. The switch, of course, would be connected to your single-port router. Just be careful to connect the WAN port of the Motorola to the switch, not the PC port. You will have to temporarily connect a computer to the pc port of the Motorola to reconfigure it (explained in the manual as well). This is where you can assign a static IP if you wish. And make sure that the PPPOE stuff is not checked. This is also how you would disable the router functions in the Motorola if they are currently enabled.

I guess it depends on the Vonage ATA you are using. I found that my Motorola VT2142-VD works better between the cable modem and the router. (note the older Linksys BEFSR41 Router - a weak point in my network)

Sorry, I should have made it clearer that I mean the ATA discussed in this thread--the Motorola VT1000. I believe it was the first, or nearly first, equipment issued by Vonage and by all accounts did not work all that well between the modem and the router. I used one for years, and now have one of the Dlink ATAs.

Yes, and I think the various routers that Vonage has supplied and or the various companies they have partnered with has been a major weak point in the Vonage offering.

Perhaps the new Vonage V-Portal is a first step attempt for some standardization that Vonage knows will work, though I have seen only one report on this forum.

I noted that Vonage reccomends putting the V-Portal between the modem and any router the customer may have. This makes a lot of sense since it isolates any phone problems to that device . . . not a router set-up or networking issues the customer has.
