PostPosted: Sat Feb 02, 2008 12:17 am    Post subject: getting request time out alot WRTP54g. Reply with quote Back to top

I have no clue what to do now..
I have tried just about everything.. I currently am running

50mb up and down speed.

When i disconnect the router I have zero problems. When I am connect with the router, my speed slows down, I have request time outs, and while online-gaming I get DC'd alot. Very annoyting.

When running ..ping 168.126.63.1 -t I get a request timed out every 20secs or so...

my current version is 1.00.62 this problem started about 1 month or so ago..

Any help???

Tim

More Info - what router (brand - model number)?
What is your configuration (cable modem->vonage router->pc)?
It is hard to help with NO information.

Sorry about no info

ok here goes.. running basic config..

INTERNET(50MB UP/DOWN) =>VDSL MODEM=>LINKSYS WRTP54G ROUTER RUNNING 1.00.62 FIRMWARE.

When I run my network w/o the router my network is literally 3x faster. The second issue I am having is the constand "request timed out"

example..

Now the numbers make look impressive, but web-surfing is rediculously slow... I am running 4800duocore... 2gig ram.. so no issue on power...

I play World of Warcraft, and lose connection religiously about once every 5-10minutes.

any info>?

run the speed test and post all the information that it shows, choose text file.

50 MB up and down, is this even possible? Who is your internet provider and how much are you paying a month?

I can max out at 10 mb down and around 670 kb up.

the WRTP54G is a pretty poor router. I know, I have one, and I put a much better router in front of it. Frankly, you'll be better off just abandoning your attempts to turn that unit into a serious router, and put a better router in front of it. I have, and like, the Linksys WRT54G (now sold as the WRT54GL). It's a nice, and powerful, router for the price, and aftermarket firmware makes it quite a bit faster and more functional.

However, if you truly have 50MB up and down, there's not a consumer router in the world that's not going to slow you WAY down. Normal mortals like me with 3MB down, 256k up don't even notice such limitations, but if you have that much bandwidth, you need some horsepower to use it.

If you have an older PC hanging around, you're probably better off building that into a router/firewall. You'll need a PC, a copy of a free firewall application like m0n0wall, smoothwall, IPCop, etc, two network cards for the PC, and a switch or hub.

Even the very impressive Linksys WRT54GL maxes out at about 20mbps or less. You need some real horsepower in your router if you want to come close to taking advantage of 50MB speeds.

If you google "WRTP54G slows connection", you will see a lot of threads on various forums. One common thread is that of the wireless being a problem, even to update the firmware, and everything from the power adapter not being adequate, old firmware, etc.

Although not specifically your problem, see http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic21766.html

Based on all the threads, I would tend to agree with NateHoy "the WRTP54G is a pretty poor router", and since he owns one, he would know better than most.

Good luck!
