I was in Office Depot today to pick up a Vonage phone adapter along with my Linksys wired router (without phone jacks) and another customer talked me out of it by saying that there is an additional cost to someone calling a Vonage phone number. I think this is nonsense but can someone please confirm this?
Another question I have is I am living in an old farm house that currently doesn't have tradional phone wiring that is in decent shape. Can I 'hard wire' two or three phone lines using CAT5e to different rooms in the house and use Vonage with my existing broadband connection? I think I can but I'd like to confirm. Thanks in advance for your help. |

Well, this would depend. If you chose a area code/number that was an LD call, then yes. Remember, with Vonage, you can have ANY avaliable area code you wish. So if you live in San Fran, but you want a Dallas number, you can do that. I hope this helps.

You need/should hook up Vonage (basically speaking) directly from your router which is connected directly to your broadband. What you do with your barb-wire set-up after that is up to you. (Sorry, I could not resist)

The only way there would be any cost for someone calling a Vonage phone number would be long distance charges. Whether or not there would be long distance charges would depend on what area code/exchange you choose for your Vonage number and what area code/exchange the person calling you has.
Here's an example: I live in Raleigh, NC. When I first got my Vonage service Vonage didn't yet offer any numbers in my area code or even in my state. Because of this I chose an Atlanta, GA number. When I had the Atlanta number, anyone in Raleigh who called me from their Raleigh phone number had to pay long distance charges because they were calling an Atlanta, GA number. If someone in Atlanta wanted to call me it would have been a local call for them (even though I was in Raleigh)...because it was an Atlanta number.
Vonage has since added numbers for Raleigh and I switched from the Atlanta number to a Raleigh number. Now when someone in Raleigh calls me it's a local call for them, and no charges.

The room that has my cable modem, router, Vonage equipment, etc. has no phone jack in it, so I had no way to connect my Vonage into my home phone wiring without running some kind of cable or wiring. I decided to just go with an expandable cordless phone system which has a main base unit that can operate up to 4 cordless handsets. I put the base unit in the room with my Vonage box and put the handsets around the house. No need to run any wires. This is very easy to do and might be an option for you to consider. |
