I have to keep the phone line active if I want to use the Vonage Service with my DSL ?? Or can I just disconnect the phone line and that will not effect my DSL Service ?? May be really stupid questions for you pros but just something I was struggling with so thought of sharing here.. Looking forward to reading some replies.. Thanks.. |

funny cause I just finished talking to a Vonage Rep (Russel) and he said that I need to have my phone line active otherwise my DSL service wont work and subsequently no DSL means no Vonage !!! thats an extra 15 dollars I have to add in to the total cost just to keep the line alive.. and what complications were you mentioning i can come across hooking it up in the phone wiring ?? appreciate your replies.. Thanks.. |

Call your local telephone company and ask them if you can disconnect your phone service and retain your DSL. This really is not a “vonage” issue this is with your LEC “local exchange carrier”. They should be able to disconnect your phone service and still leave the phone line active for the DSL line. The line for my Covad DSL line has no active telephone line just the DSL. So it can be done it’s just a matter of getting your local phone company to do it. |

I called Tech support for Verizon about 2 months ago and they assured me that I could use DSL without a regular phone. Today I went to disconnect my Phone service (I hav a cell and Vonage now) and they told me that I would lose my DSL line as well. Never mind I said.
I then called Verizon DSL tech support and they told me I could get just a DATA line which would be my DSL line. I asked how much and then didn't know. They sent me to residental services which had never heard of a data only line. They did try to sell me a Voice Wing package (VOIP) for 54.95. And I could get that without having a land line phone.
I'm not done yet but so far I think the Bells see the handwriting on the wall. Broadband users now outnumber dial-up. They want a piece of the pie because they can't make money on phone service any longer.
I doubt this affects cable, however my Verizon DSL costs me 29.99 a month and the cheapest cable I can get is 57.95. No savings there! |

It costs more to have just cable broadband service alone ($42.95 with and $60 w/o per mo on Comcast in the Northeast). You WILL pay more for the broadband service alone. Now, with xDSL the carrier may or may NOT let you do it without phone service. I would think there would be some legal issue here if they didn't allow you to do it without forcing you to sign on and keep phone service as well. Then again, I'm not an attorney. |

I'd REALLY like to see the study or reliable news article that says that besides some editorial. The link referencing the Reuters article is bad.
A search on google, yahoo and cnet results in no such article as far as I can tell.
A working url would be appreciated.

I live in CA and Verizon will not let you dissconect your POTS line and keep DSL on it. Found this out after I already switched to Vonage and told everyone my new phone number. I dropped down to metered usage on my POTS and it still costs 18$ a month. So now im screwed. Wish someone would of told me that I had to keep my POTS turned on if you have verizon as your local telephone carrier. Verizon can kiss my *** as soon as I find a way to ditch them I will and I will never use any of their services again. As for the Vonage service it works and sounds fine no noticeable difference from my old line. |

You would think that Verizon would want to keep their customers in some way shape or form! My brother and sister-in-law are on Verizon in NH and they were told they could not get dry dsl. They are going to switch back to Comcast. Luckily, we have a choice...such as it is! |
