While I do believe that Vonage will weather the storms of the judgments against them in the recent Verizon civil suit, I do believe that they are making a tremendous mistake in their future by discontinuing the WiFi phones. Here is a thread that I began and I hope that Vonage management takes this seriously.

To each his own, but I personally feel that one of Vonage's biggest mistakes has been in trying to do too much. I think a lot of their tech support problems come from them supporting too many things, rather than being focused on their basic mission.

That may be true, however, I think that the WiFi phone was an early, hardware staple of Vonage that will be sorely missed. The other recent stuff that has been introduced in the past year could be, reasonably, portrayed as the "too many things" which Vonage seeks to support, however, their original mission of Voip telephony which operates, through the hardware, much the same as the POTS system that is replacing, for a fraction of the price, is enhanced by the reliable standby of the WiFi phone.

Most of the stuff they are coming out with now is in Alpha testing, however, WiFi is tried and has been successful. It would be a shame to see it go in favor of less utilitarian offerings.

I was curious as to the wifi phone product offerings out there, who the service providers were, etc., and found this in the DPH-540 Q&A:

Does this phone work with Vonage?
Yes as an extended service offer to their standard accounts. After signing up for Vonage you are given an option for extra money to get a "Soft-Phone" Account, which has all the necessary information. For more information:
http://www.vonage.com/features.php?feature=softphone and
http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DPH%2D540#faq

The phone info can be viewed at http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=485

The Vonage web site only talks about your PC being able to use soft phone, so can this phone be connected via the soft phone account or has something changed?

While it does say that it "supports" Vonage, unless Vonage supports IT, through their proprietary firmware and provisioning of this device to work with Vonage, it is nothing more than a brick on the Vonage network.

UTStarcomm was the provider of Vonage WiFi phones and their F3000 phone resembles this D-Link phone, but Vonage no longer offers a WiFi phone for sale and it appears that they are hoping that the need for WiFi phones will simply dry-up and blow away.

That is the question . . . can it be provisioned? Seems Dlink says it can through the soft phone option.

It looks like a work around, NOT a straightforward provisioning. The Q&A from the Dlink website says:

I have the DPH540 it will work with Vonage (as mentioned) if you PAY for a softphone account. I use it on another provider who does not charge to give out the SIP credentials to MY account.

IMO. WiFi phones (as an add on) are the future of Voip. I say as an add on meaning an addition to the primary line in the house, Vonage once again missed the boat by making them a primary line, and has taken a step backwards by discontinuing them.

BTW, NO it (DPH540(1)) can not be provisioned by Vonage. There is no where in the phone to tell it to connect to a provisioning server.

That's it. Simplicity and convenience LOST. The provisioned, WiFi phone can be swiitched back and forth by the "Add On" feature contained in the web site. Once this is done, after setting up any secured APs, it is merely a matter of going to where the AP is and the rest is automatic. No computers, Voip devices or extra wireless phones to lug around. All of this technology is self contained in the WiFi phone.

Perhaps if someone out there has any influence with the Vonage upper management they could strongly suggest that the discontinuance of Vonage WiFi phones was a mistake. Certainly the tech support was not as much for these devices as some of the other stuff that Vonage has been rolling out lately.

So it is simply a SIP phone. As I recall reading somewhere, the only way one can set up a devices with Vonage SIP credentials is the soft phone addon or a business account (I recall reading that one can configure astericks rather than the ATA to use a Vonage business account).

So if one would want their PRIMARY Line to work on the SIP phone, they would need a business account.
