Do I need a phone line to keep my verizon wireless? Im not sure how all of this works if I want to try Voip. Is there a place I can go to read what is needed. I'm not even sure Im asking the right question.

I'm not sure if you're asking the right question either, but I do know that you can have a cell phone, like Verizon wireless, and also a Vonage Voip phone. They won't have the same number, though.

What you need to have for a Voip phone is a good broadband internet connection. I would suggest that you run the forum Voip speed test (under the forum speed dial dropdown menu). It will help you tell if your internet service is good for supporting Voip. We can help you interpret the results if you post them here.

There is no reason I can think of for you to "need" a phone line at all to keep your Verizon wireless - other than if they insist on another # to be able to reach you - but Vonage can be that other # - they would not know the difference. But lots of people have just cell phone service these days.

But you can also have cellphone and Voip with no problems. Different phone #'s, obviously. You can call forward from either one to the other one, call one from the other, etc. I got Vonage at first with a test #, then transfered my old home telephone # to Vonage.

I will say that Sprint would not let me transfer my cell phone # to Vonage (and assign a new one) without treating it as an account cancellation - with the associated cancellation fee. Verizon may be different. I had hoped to have all my calls go to Vonage, and use their feature where they can ring another # (my new cell phone #) at the same time as my Vonage # - so I could get all my calls wherever I was, no matter which # they called.

Sorry if this is a lot more info than you wanted.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I asked the wrong question as I stated before I wasn't sure I was asking right. I have verizon wireless for my computer...dsl....Will I be able to cancel my phone line in my home and still keep the wireless dsl for my computer? I am not sure how all of this technology works. TIA. I also did the Voip test and I am not sure what I need to post for you to see the results.

Natalie,

On the Voip test, go to the advanced tab and post everything there.

On the Verizon wireless, you need broadband internet service for Vonage to work. In your case, the service is provided by Verizon's DSL, so you need to keep that, or replace it with another broadband service. If you keep the DSL, then technically you could drop the Verizon phone service. Whether Verizon would actually be willing to do that is a business issue that you'd have to discuss with them, and whether your cost savings doing it that way would make going to Vonage a cost effective move is a business decision for you. Often the cost numbers won't add up because the DSL providers give little or no cost break when you drop their phone service.

Natalie, you say your are using Verizon Wireless DSL. Those (to me anyway) are 2 different things. Verizon Wireless would be their broadband access via an air card over their wireless (cell phone) network. And DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) would be plugging a modem into the phone jack of your home.

Now assuming you mean DSL, and to piggyback on what Steve said, you would only be able to cancel your current phone line (Verizon line) if they would provide you with a naked DSL line. A naked DSL line is a connection to the internet with NO phone service. Normally phone and DSL are sold together. Sometimes companies like Verizon will not sell just a DSL line (naked DSL) other times they will. The DSL line will be required for you to connect to Vonage, the phone line is not. Also be careful with the cost of the naked DSL line often they will be expensive. You will want to add the naked DSL to the cost of Vonage to see if it feasible. Another option for may be cable internet access or wireless access.
