Hello all,

I just started my new Vonage service with a Linksys RT31P2 router. It works perfectly except for the fact that people I speak to tell me that it sounds as though I am randomly pressing the buttons on my phone, but I am not. I do not hear these tones. They seem to happen randomly, on the average of one every few minutes or so. They are really irritating the people I'm speaking with! Three calls and one e-mail to tech support have not helped, even after they claimed to have upgraded the firmware in my router. Anyone else experiencing this? Did you get it resolved?

This is due to DTMF. According to Vonage, this is an inherent problem with Voip (and current devices) and there is no guarantee they can get rid of it. The tech rep I had emailed about this said he lowered the gain output levels on my device but he couldn't guarantee it would fix the issue. He also went on to say that they, Vonage, we were with their current hardware providers to fix the issue. For me, this issue never happens with me, just my wife every once in a while. I guess her voice is producing just the correct frequency to set off the tone response.

just to add my 2 cents, yes this is an old known issue with the Voip industry in general, not just Vonage. and you're right about female (higher pitched I assume) voices setting it off. I get it on hold for some companies. But it is interesting that you don't hear it. I've always heard it the few times it's happened to me.

Since the codec actually has to send the DTMF tone, something is triggering it. If it's the pitch of your voice or a dog barking or whatever. Something is too sensitive.

I too have been experiencing the touch tone beeps sporadically when I'm on the phone with someone. Interestingly, I started hearing the beeps within the last several weeks, and I've had callers on the other end telling me they heard the beeps too (but at times I did not hear the beeps). I actually came to this forum tonight hoping to find some answers on why those beeps have been occurring. After reading this thread, I'm somewhat relieved to know it's not just happening to me. Nonetheless, it's still very annoying.

Also, another very irritating thing I've noticed is a clicking sound that sounds like someone is picking up another phone extension in the house. This too is something I've noticed occurring in the last several weeks. It makes me wonder if Vonage has made some changes recently that started causing all these sounds that I never noticed before. (And I've been with Vonage since mid-October.) That periodic clicking sound really does bother me though because it sounds almost as if someone could be tapping the phone line and listening in. Anyone else notice this?

I've only had Vonage for 2 weeks now, and today I noticed the tones and the clicking noise. I CAN tell you, I had the same behavior with my previous Broadvoice connection. It was worse with them. The other party I was talking to never heard anything. The only thing that bothers me personally is that I'm constantly looking at my receiver thinking it is another call (call waiting).

Thank God I'm not the only one! I thought it was my phones. I was so convinced that it was my cordless phone that I went out last night and bought a new 5.8GHz phone! (That's OK. Better than the CHEAP Olympia phone that I'm replacing).

My Configuration:
Vonage Voip with 7MBps Cable Internet
iBook 1.33 GHz ComboDrive
iMac 800MHz SuperDrive
Airport Extreme Wireless Network - 802.11g
iPod with Video- 60GB
2 Hughes DVR2 TiVo Receivers
1 Phillips DSR6000 TiVo Receiver

I have the PAP2 adapter and have the same issue, Vonage seems to want to point the problem at my house or equipment, they went as far as having me replace the PAP2. It didn't help.

I find it strange that I could go for 2+ weeks without any issues or beeps, then all of a sudden they happen on every call, regardless of who is talking. Then they stop for a week and now they are back.

With others reporting this it would seem that this squarely falls on the Vonage side, and they should escalate to their engineers to fix.

So far every support person I have talked to has a completely different story and explanation of what it is... From it's my cordless phone, to it is women's voices, to it is just a Voip thing and there is nothing they can do.

I am giving them another week then I am out, as in it's current state my Voip line is unusable.
