Ok, I've got a rather advanced setup so bear with me. I'm in temp housing, the owner of the house has provided wireless access but I do not have physical access to the router. However, due to lax security, I do have admin access to it. Here's the deal.
Belkin54g router to the internet (192.168.2.x) Linksys (with custom firmware) acting as a wireless bridge VT2142 (refurb) Wan plugged into Linksys
Now, I have several computers plugged into the Linksys and they work fine using DHCP or static IPs on the 192.168.2.x subnet. The VT2142 gets an IP from the Belkin just fine, and I can use the admin ping tool to hit the Belkin. However, the VT2142 doesn't seem to be able to talk to the outside world. Nothing I do seems to make it work. I've tried assigning it a static IP 192.168.2.101 and making that IP the DMZ on the Belkin. Still no luck, it refuses to talk outside and I get the red power light after a while.
I can't put the VT2142 in front of the Belkin because I don't have access to the Cable Modem. I've even tried plugging the Linksys into the Ethernet port, assigned the VT2142's LAN a 192.168.2.x IP and used static routing to force it to go through the Belkin.
Note, I've never had this router working as I just got it. I thought Voip was a good solution in temp housing since I don't have a hard line. I used to have Vonage and DLink adapter in my last house, but canceled due to dropped calls (mainly cause my crappy cable service).
Any thoughts? |

i would be ever surprised if that worked. 802.11x is not a true bi-directional protocol. my guess is that the latency is just to high so the Vonage ata times out when trying to connect to the Vonage servers, hence the blinking red pwr light. |

I have been told if you get a computer (laptop) to connect wirelessly you can set up ICS to the Ethernet port and hook the Vonage box into it to give you access. I know someone that does this in hotels with WIFI. |

josephfe's suggestion might be the best for now since this is temp housing.
I believe you would need to enable ICS in order for this setup to work where you connect it via your NID card on your laptop or desktop.
gbronzer, I do agree with you that in principle, your setup should work. Let me get this straight.
ISP -> modem -> belkin54g wireless router -> Linksys wireless bridge -> port x to vt2142 wan.
So here, the belkin54g acts as your dhcp and your vt2142 is connected via an ethernet cable to one of your ports in your Linksys. I am wondering if the actual problem is a configuration on your Linksys.
Can your computers get on wirelessly with the belkin54g? If so, then try the method suggested by Josephfe. If that works, then we know that it is some configuration issue on your Linksys. |
