Hi. I am using a Vonage/Motorola phone adapter and just got a Trendnet wifi router for use with my son's laptop. All of Vonage's documentation says to put any existing router BEFORE the phone adapter. Problem is that I want to turn off/unplug my wifi router, when it's not in use. But if I do, it will kill the internet connection to the adapter. How can I configure it to work, or can I put the wifi router AFTER the phone adapter without any bad effects?
What do you think? |

You can place the router after the adapter. HOWEVER, all your internet traffic will have to pass through it. If you are only surfing the internet it won't be an issue but if you are using P2P file sharing programs, gaming, downloading movies/video, directv, etc. you may have issues. So it really depends on your internet usage. |

So, is there a way to turn off my wifi (for obvious security reasons)at the times that it's not being used, with it in the correct placement, and still have the modem signal still pass through the router to the adapter? |

One advantage to using the Vonage router first is that it has QOS wich prioritizes Voip packets so that you have quality connections even if other computers are using the internet at the same time. I agree with Brian that it all depends on your internet usage. Does your trendnet have QOS settings? I'm guessing not. If you place the trendnet first, you can shut off the WiFi without turning off the router. You need to log into the router and select turn off/on wireless radio, or something similar, each time. You could set up good security settings for the WiFi and then you wouldn't need to do that.
If you are not comfortable doing that, you are right that it isn't a good idea to leave on an open wireless connection. Specially if you live in an apartment or something similar. Remember to turn off the DHCP server in the router that you place second in the chain. Ultimately though, you need to play around and try each one and see what works for you. Good Luck! |

Ok,guys. I left the router in the correct position, and just turning off wireless using the router config. The router itself has no QoS settings, but I am using WPA-PSK with a decent password, should I decide to leave wireless on.
Thanks guys! |

Sure. If you are able to use the internet and make good sounding phone calls at the same time with that set up, then I would call it good. If not, you may want to place the Vonage router first and then use your trendnet as just an access point. |
