Actually, you're wrong.... Using both my softphone (modified) and a SIP phone on my softphone account, the extension 'name' is passed to all carriers by Vonage. (I've used a number of Voip carriers with Asterisk, and was surprised that Vonage supported this while most don't!) My guess is that the CNAME data is pulled from the User Name of the device (softphone, pbx, ATA, etc.) Since the softphone can be modified, as can a pbx, it works. I would guess that to keep things simple Vonage uses an extension 'name' of the phone number on the ATA, though this is only a guess.
Now, if Vonage would only open up a BYOD service, even if they stated that there would be little tech support, I think they'd find their business increase. I've been a Vonage customer for 5+ years (early adopter) and have found it to be a good value, good customer service and reliable. Too bad they don't try the BYOD model, at least on a limited fashion. |
