On some calls, all of a sudden, the caller will not be able to hear me. I have to hang up and call them back. It has started happening so frequently that I have to warn people about the possibility of it happening.

After reading another post (http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic21378.html+cannot+hear), it looks like my problem could be a bad router. How can I determine if the router is bad? I've tried calling Vonage at 866-243-4357 but haven't been able to speak to anybody yet. They couldn't hear me, go figure. Sad

1. Your location - Cincinnati Ohio
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) TW - Cable
3. Upload (459 Kbps) and download (2299 Kbps) speeds
4. Modem make and model Toshiba PCX10005. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2 DLink-VWR
6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC Toshiba-->DLink-VWR-->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc Caller cannot hear me after a while.
8. Run this Voip Test: After the test has fully completed, in the Advanced Tab, click on "View Text" in the lower right hand corner. Copy-N-Paste that data into your post.
[B]Download speed 2299 Kbps (socket test)
Upload speed 459 Kbps (socket test)

Maximum pause 149 ms
Round trip time 42 ms
Upstream jitter 3.1 ms

Upstream packet order 100 %

Your test results point to an ISP problem. What are your ISP's advertised speeds? The speeds your getting are pretty slow for cable. Pause times are very high as well, that is indicative of the ISP.

Your router is not the issue, as it does not factor in the equation since you have the Vonage device plugged directly in to the modem..

What kind of phone are you using? 2.4 GHz cordless phones with wireless routers can cause a problem.

The speed test results indicate that I can have up to 6 Voip connections at a time. Would a slower connection result in the caller not being able to hear me, while I can hear them fine?

The Vontage DLink-VWR has the phone cord plugged into the house phone wiring. There is a 5.8 wireless base unit phone connected to the house phone wiring about 40 feet away from the router. This phone has two extentions. If I pick up an extension, the caller still cannot hear me.

I had this same issue when I moved to my new house with a new router (Honeywell) installed in the home wiring for the computers. I was on with Vonage Tech Support for probably an hour going through my new router settings. They told me everything on the router settings looked OK. It still would cut my voice off after just a few minutes. I disconnected everything from the Honeywell router & re-connected my old Linksys in its place. Everything then worked fine. Hence, it was definitely my router. I don't think it was bad, but I think there was a setting that was kicking me off. Vonage unfortunately couldn't figure that out. I haven't looked into it any further at this point & am still just using my old Linksys router. It seems like if the router settings are not "perfect", then you will have issues.
BTW-I'm in Cincinnati too with TW!

Beckett07, the 5.8 GHz cordless should not be an issue. I would, however, unplug things from the house wiring and see if that makes a difference.

Meanwhile, Brian pointed out that you may have an ISP issue, based on your Voip test results. However, I'd like to be sure. Are these results from the forum test accessed through the drop down menu? That test normal reports "packets out of order". 100% would be very bad. Your test just lists "packet order", and I don't know how to interpret that.

I use time warner in cincinnati and after getting Vonage, I was advised by someone on this board to get a different router, as the Toshiba PCX10005 is Docsys 1.0 and is supposedly not very good for Voip.

TW replaced it with a Motorola Sufboard.

BTW, my results wit TW in Cincinnati:

Your network configuration does not make sense. Is Toshiba another computer or is it your modem? Can you please explain your network setup a little better, that would help with things.

Thanks for everybody who responded!

I called the cable company who insisted that the cable modem was not the problem. But they still came out and swapped it for a newer one. The installer also told me that this wouldn't help my problem. During the whole time they indicated that if I had their phone service that I wouldn't have these problems. I told them that I would love to use their service, but their price was too high.

The new cable modem is a Toshiba PCX2200. The installer did admit that the old modem (Toshiba PCX10005) was 10 years old and probably wasn't up to the lastest technology.

It has been a week now and no problems!
