I'm thinking about signing up and have been reading the forums. My Vonage area code is 662 but the city is listed as Memphis. That's about 100 miles from where I live. If my nextdoor neighbor calls my Vonage number will it be a long distance call for them? Right now Memphis is a long distance call from here. Maybe I've been reading too much? |

If a local calling area is not listed (ie your city or a neighboring city that is a local call), then yes, it would be long-distance for your neighbor to call, regardless of the fact that the area code is the same. Remember, many area codes cover large areas and a lot of calls within your area code are not local.

Thanks for the reply Maaz. That's what I was thinking. Guess I'll have to wait a little longer. Is there any way to find out if Vonage has plans to include my city? |

Thanks Dan. My area code is available but not the city exchange that would let people in my area call me at local rates. If I signed up with Vonage and I called my home from the office it would be a long distance call. I''m just glad I found out about this before I signed up. |

As a Vonage customer for the past 6 months, it is cheaper than Bell South here in Montgomery, AL. I signed up when my brother in FL told me about it. I then signed my daughter up in Providence, RI. I expected to see a Montgomery Area Code within the past 6 months. Still, no area code and no info from Vonage about it. This is my NUMBER 1 dissatisfier with Vonage and it will be a back breaker for them. I am not recommending Vonage to anyone else and fully expect to switch to LINGO within the next few months along with my brother and daughter because I simply cannot continue to deal with a Norfolk, VA area code in Alabama!!!
Lingo has the following area codes right now in Alabama:
BIRMINGHAM 205
DECATUR 256
FLORENCE 256
HUNTSVILLE 256
MOBILE 251
MONTGOMERY 334
TALLADEGA 256
TUSCALOOSA 205
I am suggesting to my friends and collegues here in Alabama to sign up for LINGO as Vonage continues to be silent about why they can't sign me up for a 334 area code.
What say you, Vonage?

When I was ready to sign-up for Vonage they had just run out of numbers in the 617 area-code, so I opted for another Massachusetts area-code which could be long-distance for callers in Boston (where I live). When 617 numbers became available again I switched my phone number.
Don't forget that a lot of people have a POTS account and/or wireless account that may include unlimited long-distance calls (albeit much more expensive than Vonage).
Plus, if a call to your Vonage number is long-distance for someone you can always call them back so they only have to pay for the first minute.
I realized when I signed up that Vonage would save me $53 per month over my local POTS service... that's just too much savings to delay signing up because someone I know locally might have to make a long-distance call to my number. Why should I pay an additional $636 per year simply because someone I know doesn't want to get an inexpensive and unlimited calling plan? |
