PostPosted: Thu Jan 03, 2008 12:55 pm    Post subject: Help! - WRTP54G Using Only Wireless 2 Connect ( No Modem ) Reply with quote Back to top

Hello All,

I have a dilemma - I have a linksys/vonage WRPT54G and I a just relocated to an area that only has wireless access. I am runing Vista Home premium on a new Gateway laptop.

I was told that I could get a crossover cable and use the ethernet port in my laptop ( while connected to to the web via the internal wireless card ) to the wan/lan port in the WRPT54G to get connectivity to the WRPT54G.

BTW, I also enabled Internet Connection Sharing for the wireless connection with auto DHCP.

When I hooked up the crossover cable to the WRTP54G,, the power, wireless and internet blue lights do come on and I can even see the unsecured linksys router in available networks, however with only local connectivity.

The only way I can access the firmware at the router is to change over to connect to the linksys network ( instead of the regular wireless connection from the internal card) with the password admin/admin.

Once inside the firmware, I can not get the router to get an ip addy, it just remains blank, even after I press dhcp refresh/renew.

I tried everything, even calling linksys who just put me on hold.

Any help would really be appreciated!

Thanks,
JCC

I think that for you to use internet sharing the computer or device has to be a member of your network. Also i do not think that your laptop has a built in DHCP server, so the linksys cannot acquire an IP from your laptop, hence is not a member of your network.

I would try and set up static IP's for both your laptop wired conection and the lnksys on the same subnet.

The DNS settings for the Linksys should be your laptops's hard wired IP.

See if this works.

I have been curious if a wireless ethernet bridge would work to allow Vonage to operate from a wireless network.

Thanks for your reply-

I think that I know how to do it - could you please just provide me with instructions with a little more detail?

I think that your solution will work bause eveything works just no Ip in the router.

Thanks,
JC

For your Laptop (the sharing computer):

Unckeck the box "allow network users to control or disable the internet connection"

TCP/IP Settings wired connectionin the Sharing Computer
Enter the following information into your Sharing computer Use the Interet Protocol Version 4):

IP address: set to 192.168.0.1

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: Make sure there are NO entries.

DNS Configuration: Leave this alone

For the Vonage Router:

IP address: set to 192.168.0.2

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Gateway: set to 192.168.0.1

DNS set to 192.168.0.1

The DNS may or may not work. If not, try the DNS assigned to your laptop by checking the status (details) in your wireless connection
