PostPosted: Sat Dec 18, 2004 4:08 pm    Post subject: Connecting Linksys RT31P2 and Netgear MR814v2 Reply with quote Back to top

Hi
I am new member so apologise if this has been already posted and replied, but I couldnt find it searching the posts though.
I am looking for help or guidance on how I can connect my Linksys RT31P2 and Netgear MR814v2 to enable wireless networking at my home along with the Vonage service. Confused
I am currently on broadband service through a cable modem (Motorola SB4200) that connects to the Linksys RT31P2. The internet service and the phone is working fine.
Question Now how do I connect the Netgear wireless router MR814v2 ? I am not sure whether I should make the Netgear the primary router or secondary and where should I have my DHCP enabled ? Also what I found was my default Linksys router IP is 192.168.15.1 whereas the Netgear one is 192.1687.0.1 and dont know if I would break anything if I force change one of those IP addresses ? Any other tips or help on where and if need to use cross over vs normal ethernet cables and info on what firmware i should be having at minimum on both the routers would be helpful. If anyone has a similar config but faced specific issues please highlight them as well.
Thanks in advance.

I tried the setup as mentioned, but it didnt work. I think there could be a problem because both Linksys and Netgear router might be creating a clash on IP addresses given both have different addresses and also DHCP enabled. Sad
Any suggestions from anyone who got a similar network of 2 routers to work well ?
Or am I missing any steps, the Vonage article I followed step by step - didnt work.

the routers should definitely have different ip addresses. the linksys rt31p2 is 192.168.15.1 and in my case, my wless router is 192.168.2.1. Both have dhcp enabled. I doubt it has anything to do with your specific brand of router, but probably something else.
I'm not sure what your problem is, but it would help to have some more details.
here's my setup spelled out for reference:
cable modem hooked into linksys (vonage) internet port, ethernet from port 1 of linksys (vonage) to internet port of other router.
One thing that may help is turning them all off and turning them on in specific order (i.e. cable modem, linksys, other router, computer). not sure if you did that or not. sounds silly but it's fixed some people's issues.
if it still fails, is there any other details you can give? can you access the netgear router when it's plugged into the linksys or no?

Disable the DHCP on the wireless router.

You also need to change the IP address of you Netgear router to match the first 3 numbers of you Linksys router. Something like this 192.168.15.2, anything but 1 for the last number and it should be less then 100, 100 is usually the number that DHCP starts with.

One other thing is that usually when you use a router as a switch (that is what you are doing with the wireless router when you turn off DHCP) you dont connect it with the Internet port. You should try going from port 1 of the linksys router to one of the numbered ports on the netgear router.

From my cable modem I feed the WAN port on the Linksys (Vonage) router. Then from one of the ethernet ports on the Vonage router I feed an ETHERNET port on my second Linksys (wireless) router. Leave the WAN port empty on the second router. As mentioned my jschramm, turn off DHCP on the second router, effectively turning this router onto a switch. I set the IP address on the second (wireless) router to 192.168.15.2 so I can still log onto it if I ever see a need.

I wanted the second router for mainly for the wireless connectivity, and for the firewall.

I was very confused as to how to daisy chain routers before I tried it, but it really was not too difficult, and after about a week the system, as well as the Vonage phone service has worked flawlessly! Very Happy
