I signed up for Vonage yesterday and am waiting for the adapter to arrive.

I have spent a week or so reading posts on this forum before I made the decision to try Vonage.

I ran a Voip performance test and I was concerned about the Low QoS percentage. From what I understand QoS is the ability to maintain a steady stream of data.

Supposedly Comcast power boost boosts my speed for a period of time when downloading a file. Is my low QoS percentage being caused by the spike and fall/pause caused by power boost?

Is this something I should be concerned with? If so what is a remedy?

One other bit I need advice on. Currently I am running a wireless network.

In this order
Wall
SA WebSTAR DPC2100R2 modem
WRT54G

Im pretty ignorant when it comes to computers, but it seems like I would want to put the phone adapter between the modem and router but several post I read say it should be connected after the router.

Here are my test results. Any help is appreciated.

Download speed 14168 Kbps (socket test)
Upload speed 1614 Kbps (socket test)
Quality of service 46 %
Maximum pause 251 ms
Round trip time 17 ms
Upstream jitter 1.1 ms
Upstream packet loss 0 %
Upstream packet order 100 %
Upstream discards 0 %
Downstream jitter 0.4 ms
Downstream packet loss 0 %
Downstream packet order 100 %
Downstream discards 0 %

Hello,

I'm also new to Vonage....But since I've be reading the internet about voip....I've noticed that these Voip tests vary greatly, depending on who's website or the server location.

It seems like the Voip test listed in the sticky gives me a low score Cry but other sites give me great scores.Very Happy

Try this site and see if you get a better result.

http://voipreview.org/voipspeedtester.aspx

Keep in mind, that these Voip tests, are just Java based applications simulating a Voip connection.

I say, just hook up Vonage and see how it works in " in the real world "

As for the location of the adapter....I've used it before and after the router....and had good results either way....I have decided to keep the adapter before the router, just so Vonage has priority in case of a low bandwidth situation.

First speed boost has nothing to do with your quality scores, and speed is a very, very small part of the quality of a Voip call. I agree with PSJ on wait and see once you get your adapter. If you have issues come and ask.

I would suggest setting the Vonage unit BEHIND the router, and turning on and properly setting up QoS through your router. What version Linksys do you have? Give priority to the Vonage device in the QoS settings. Setting it in front of your router will give it priority, but a the same time can effect other things you may do online i.e. gaming, p2p, surfing, etc. All traffic has to pass through the device, which in most cases is not a very good router.
