PostPosted: Mon Dec 31, 2007 9:01 am    Post subject: Intermittent dropped calls since the last couple of weeks Reply with quote Back to top

Since the last couple of weeks I encounter calls being dropped after a couple of minutes. I use a D-Link 2540B ADSL modem / router and the Motorola VT2442. The Motorola is placed in a DMZ so it's connected directly to the internet. The other network traffic to my PC is going through the D-Link. My Provider is AT&T and I have the 3000Mbps DSL (512 up) connection.
The speedtest gave me following data:

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 2064088 bps
Upload speed: 437032 bps
Quality of service: 74 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 526 ms
Average download pause: 6 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 43 ms
Average round trip time to server: 43 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 2.0 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.3 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 7
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

I assume that the maximum pause after downloads causes the problem and had a tech coming out to check things but he didn't find anything on my side or at the DSL boxes down the street. I get a good signal at the modem (signal / noise ratio......) and no errors.
On the graph from the speedtest I see a that the pause between downloads is going up high every 2 to 3 seconds from being ~4ms to 500ms or sometimes even higher.
Does anybody have any suggestions where I could find the cause of my connection problems? Thanks in advance for any answers Smile

Actually, from what I see, I think you've diagnosed the problem correctly. If you can't convince your ISP, you might approach it from another direction. You don't seem to be getting the bandwidth for which you're paying. Maybe if you demand that they fix that, the fix will cure the pause issue as well.

Thanks for the answer Steve, I had another tech come by today and we checked the DSL signal with his modem. No change. Same good signal but still the interruptions during download. I already connected my modem to the phone box on the outside of my house to outrule interference with the house wiring but that didn't change anything either.
The tech told me that I would need to speak with some higher up guys in the tech department. AT&T thinks that as long as you get above 1.5Mbps with a 3Mbps connection that that would be an acceptable result. I don't think so. Not when the DSL main office is basically around the corner. I'll post updates about my progress.
I recently found a couple (3) 'Super Frame Errors' in the log of my modem and some other things that I don't know what they mean:

Total ES: 5 / 0
Total SES: 4 / 0
Total UAS: 1145 / 0

First number is downstream second is upstream.
Have a happy new year Smile

Typical. The computer broadband industry is the only one I know in which the provider can arbitrarily decide that something less than what he agreed to provide is "good enough" and get away with it.
