PostPosted: Sun Dec 30, 2007 2:12 am    Post subject: My Vonage RT31P2 stopped working - Need Urgent Help Reply with quote Back to top

I have been using a Linksys RT31P2 for some time now for my Vonage service. It suddenly stopped working yesterday. I can't access the Internet through it or make or receive calls. As soon as I connect the Pc directly to the DSL modem the internet starts to work. Therefore it is not the Internet connection. What I have noticed is that before the green Internet light on the RT31P2 used to flash fast but now it is solidly lit with no flashing effect. I have tried the hard Reset button for several seconds but nothing changes.

With the Pc connected to the RT31P2 I have typed http://192.168.15.1 but it comes back saying cant find that page standard error message.

I have also reloaded the Java but still the same result cant connect.

Can anyone help please urgently. I am travelling so calling Vonage from a hotel line will be very expensive specially if they take a long time trying to resolve it.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

You say you are traveling, and in a hotel. So I assume you are using the hotel's internet connection correct? You also said when you connect the PC it works fine. My question is the first time you connected your PC did you have to authenticate your log in? Such as using a user name and password or click a button to agree to the TOS for that hotel?

If so, that is your problem not your ATA. The hotel's connection has recored your PC's MAC address and it will allow your PC to log on, usually until check out time tomorrow (after which you need to authenticate your PC again). When you plug the ATA in to the Hotel's connection it has a different MAC address, so the connection is asking you to authenticate it, of course you can't see that because the ATA doesn't have a screen.

You have a couple options depending on your level of comfort:

1. Share your internet connection on your laptop and plug the ATA in to it.
2. Clone the MAC address of your PC to the ATA. Of course, you will need to connect to the ATA to do this.
3. Use softphone
4. Don't use Vonage

Thanks a lot your reply.

Unfortunately it doesnt seem to be the casue. firstly it is an open connection that does not require authentification or username and password. Second I have stayed at the same Hotel before and never had a problem. Third I did try sharing my PC connection and connect the ATA through it. Still didnt work.

I think it could be the ATA needs to be re-configured but I dont know how as it wont let me connect to 192.168.15.1

Any further help will be appreciated.

If you can't get to the standard login/configuration page for the RT31P2, I don't think its a configuration issue, I think the router is dead.

If you haven't tried it yet I would try to reset the device following these steps. (This is a longshot since you have used the reset button, but it can't hurt to try.

Follow these steps to do this.

1. Unplug the power cord from the router
2. Hold down the reset button
3. Plug in the power cord from the router
4. Wait 30 seconds and then let go of the reset button.

If this works it should reset your router back to its factory defaults. Hopefully once you get to this point you can log in to the standard web page again (remember that its reset so the password will be back to the default as well)

If this doesn't work the only other thing I would suggest (other than replacing the router) would be to disconnect the router from the hotel internet, reboot your PC, and try to connect to the configuration page again.

I wish I could be more optimistic, but if you can't get to the router config page my feeling is that the router is dead.

This may not help, but if your router for some reason acquired a different IP address, connecting to it is akin to finding a needle in a haystack.

You can use a IP scanner available at http://www.eusing.com/ipscan/free_ip_scanner.htm

Start at 192.168.1.1 and scan through 192.168.255.255

This will take a while and scrolling through the results will also take a while.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

I ran through the IP scanner and it shows a few IP addresses which are ticked but most have a cross next to them including 192.168.15.1.

I think the Adapter is dead. How could I replace it? Would I need to buy another one or would Vonage replace it? Whats a good replacement and how do I switch my number on it specially if the router is dead?

Thanks,

You can talk to Vonage about replacing it, or you can buy one at retail that's specifically marked for Vonage use. Then go to your web account, register the new device, and switch you number to it. All that can be done on your web account.
