Have not been able to connect to the LAN with either the Linksys
RT31P2 or Motorola VT2142 phone/voice gateways. Both are wired not wireless phone adapters. Windows XP Control panel is showing that the network connection is enabled, but the ethernet connection light on the phone gateway does not light up. Cannot simultaneously use the phone and have access to the internet, only one or the other, but not both. This was not a problem until about a month ago. Vonage support determined that the Linksys RT31P2 was defective and replaced with the Motorola VT2142. Still, no ethernet connection between the phone adapter and the computer. Has anyone had this problem and found the solution? Would appreciate some help on this.

Please post all the technical details listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum.

You say that you can't simultaneously connect to the internet and have phone service. Does that mean that you can connect to the internet through the adapter if you don't pick up the phone? Or do you have to remove the adapter?

Hmmm. OK, from this and your private message I gather that the phone works when you connect the VT2142 to the cable modem, but the computer won't connect to the internet in that configuration. However, the computer will connect when you wire it directly to the modem. Correct?

From this we know that the VT2142 must be connecting successfully to your service. Otherwise the phone wouldn't work. The question is why the computer won't connect to the LAN side of the VT. Can you log on to the VT2142 admin page when the computer is plugged into the LAN side of the VT? 192.168.15.1 is the default address; router is the default username and password.

If not, check your computer LAN setup and make sure that it's set up for dynamic addressing (DHCP). Then re-boot and try again.

By the way, you can run the forum Voip speed test without the Vonage box connected. At this point, the test won't tell us anything with impact on this problem.

You've got it. That's correct.

Cannot log on to the VT2142 admin page with computer plugged into LAN side of VT and LAN set up for DHCP as suggested.

If it wasn't for the fact that you had the same problem with an RT31P2, I'd guess that you had a bad VT2142. As it is, I have to agree with your comment in your private message that it's a computer software issue, but I don't know what the issue is. At this point, I'd try setting a static address of 192.168.15.2 in your computer. Re-boot, and see if that allows you to log on to the VT admin page.

Meanwhile, let me quote what you said in your private message for others to ponder on:

Quote:
I have cable and can only access the internet by connecting the
ethernet cable directly between the Motorola Surfboard modem and the computer. When the internet connection is from the modem to the VT2142 and from the VT2142 to the computer via ethernet cable, I lose internet access and get a message...Unable to connect to the internet, etc. However, the digital phone works in this instance, but cannot, of course when the modem bypasses the phone adapter. The Local Area Connection 2 properties window shows "Connect using Motorola SURFboard SB5101 USB C". Is this correct or should it be "cnetPro200WL"? I vaguely remember this as being there before it became disabled somehow. I've not been able to use the phone because I need to have internet access for business.

Also, be sure to check your cables. Are you using any in the setup with both computer and VT2142 that you don't use with just one or the other?

Steve,
Thanks for sticking with me on this problem.
Tried setting the static address, etc., as suggested. Still- no connectivity.

I've determined that the network adapter card is not enabled. I think the card is the cnetPRO200WL I mentioned earlier.
It is listed in "change/remove programs". Also, as mentioned earlier, the Motorola SB5101 modem appears in the "connect using" box where the PRO200WL formerly was listed. Don't know how to enable it if this is the solution to the problem. Have used the blue ethernet cable for the internet connection and the yellow one for the connection between the VT and the computer. Never interchanged.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi Steve and all who have been following this thread.

Happily, I now have an ethernet connection for both the VT2142 and SB5101 modem. Now the internet can be accessed through the phone adapter while the phone is being used.

I called Dell support since I have a Delll Dimension 8200 computer and explained that the cnetPro200WL device was not connected and that I thought the driver was missing. I booted up the Dell Utilities, Drivers disc as directed by the technician and attempted to reinstall the cnet adapter driver. After the first try, we searched for the adapter under MyComputer (right click)>Properties>Hardware Manager> Drivers>network adapters, it wasn't there !
After a second attempt failed, the tech asked me to disconnect all cables, open the computer case, remove the ethernet card and reinsert it. After doing this, I then reconnected everything, booted up and the cnetPRO200WL appeared under "Network Adapters". Also, both of the LED lights on the back of the computer were lit up whereas previously they were not. After connecting the VT2142 to the modem and computer and the phone adapter after all lights on the VT were lit, I connected the phone cable from the wall to the VT and waited for the phone light to become solid (not blinking). As I said at the beginning of this post, everything now works perfectly. The real culprit here was that the cnet adapter card was not fully seated in its socket. I noticed before removing it that the green lever that locks down all cards was not engaged!!! Not sure how this happened, but it could have come loose the last time I cleaned the inside of the case. It appears that the software was there the whole time but because the hardware (network card) was loose, the modem could be connected only directly to the computer and not throught the adapter. Hope this helps someone who may run into a similar problem. Lol
