PostPosted: Fri Dec 28, 2007 11:28 am    Post subject: Upgrading Router to Motorola VT2542 (or equiv) Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all,
First time poster here. I an a current Vonage customer who wants to upgrade my router to The Motorola VT2542. I called Vonage and they said they cant send a new router unless I add another line. They said I should buy the equipment in a local store and install it. Problem is that the VT2524 seems to be made exclusively for Vonage, and I cant find it at stores like Best Buy. Short of cancelling my account and resubscribing (seems extreme just to upgrade equipment), any suggestions about how I can achieve what I want to do?

Failing that, any suggestions on equipment that might be equivalent (2 phone numbers, at least 3 ethernet connections, wireless)

Thanks

Sometimes if you call the business office and indicate that an upgraded router is the price of your continued patronage, they'll make things happen for you.

Meanwhile, what are you upgrading from, and why? If it's just to get wireless, most folks around here would say to get a good wireless router with QoS (the WRT54GL for example) and put your existing Vonage box behind it.

I did kinda say that I would consider cancelling service. But I wasnt aware of the 'stacking' option. It is just to get wireless, and I have a WRT54G (without the L - is that still good?). So my configuration would be cable to Toshiba Cable Modem PCX1100U (from RoadRunner) to WRT54G to Lynksys RT31P2 (from Vonage). Is that good?

Thanks

Yes, that's a good setup. I don't know the difference between the Linksys with the L suffix and the one without. Maybe someone else will jump in, but I suspect that you'll be happy with that setup. Just be sure to set QoS in the WRT to favor the Vonage box.

For light duty to the computers connecting wirelessly, you also have the option of putting the WRT behind the RT. But the way you're doing it is generally preferred (with the QoS setting).

Well, to try to explain the difference in the routers:

GL runs a Linux based firmware are has a lot more flash (RAM & ROM) memory. It can also easily be flashed with 3rd party firmware such as Tomato or DD-WRT, etc.

G routers if it pre-version 5 is also an excellent router with lots of RAM & ROM, and can be easily flashed as well. The newer versions (v5+), have very little memory among other subtle differences, and can not be flashed with 3rd party firmware. Overall IMO v5+ are excellent door stops, but lousy routers, and shouldn't even be called WRT. WEK or WEAK comes to mind.

Thanks for the info - I'll give it a try. Unfortunately, I've lost my setup disc for the WRT, but the indications are that I probably dont need it. BTW, the WRT is Version 2, so by my reading that sounds good. I'll let you know. Thanks again
