PostPosted: Sat Dec 22, 2007 4:19 pm    Post subject: RT31P2 Firmware Corrupted - How to Recover? Reply with quote Back to top

My Linksys RT31P2 has stopped working, will not connect to the Internet, will not provide a dialtone. Also will not allow access to web admin tools. I can connect direct to Internet bypassing the RT31, so ISP is not an issue.

The RT31 POWER light is blinking rapidly. According to Linksys Support, the firmware is corrupted and needs to be reloaded. Also according to Linksys Support, only Vonage can change/update the firmware on this Vonage-locked device.

I spent 45 mins on the phone with Vonage rep (Phillipines), who was very courteous and professional, however unable to restore the device to either current or previous firmware versions. I have set a static IP on my PC (192.168.1.2) subnet 255.255.255.0 to attempt access to admin screens, but so far no luck. Device does not respond to ping requests on 192.168.1.1.

The firmware failure occurred sometime between my last received call on 12/14 and when I returned home from vacation on 12/19. I am certain no one disturbed the device during any possible firmware update sent by Vonage, as there was no one here.

Any ideas on what can be done with this device?

Thanks!

Have you tried the reset button on the R3T1P2?

In the back of the device there is a red recessed reset button.

Do the following:

Unplug RT31P2
Hold down reset button
Plug in RT31P2
Wait 15 seconds
Release reset button

Let it sit for a few minutes, and see if anything happens.

This should reset it to the firmware defaults. If this doesn't work and you can't get internet or phone from the device, the router is probably dead.

The blinking light is also a sign that it is dead. I did a quick google search on rt31p2 blinking power button and I see a number of references saying the same.

Yes, I tried the hard reset procedure already...no luck yet. Cry

Hoping someone has experienced this same issue and can share instructions for recovery. Linksys Support says they could fix it, IF the device were not locked to Vonage firmware...

OK, here is a shot in the dark. I was updating my router and access point (way overdue) with new firmware. The router reverted to 192.168.1.1 as expected. The access point reverted to who knows where. Checked some forums that gave me tha answer:

Connect a computer via Ethernet to the router. Yes, some models only have one port- that's OK.

2. Manually set your computer's IP to: 192.168.1.240 and your Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0

3. Then direct your browser to 192.168.1.245 and change settings.

the other thing you can do is download an IP scanner to find the ip of the router at http://www.eusing.com/ipscan/free_ip_scanner.htm

Use a large range such as 192.168.1.1. to 192.168.255.255, get a couple of cups of coffee, scroll down while drinking coffee and you might find the router address.
