Sorry I forgot to do this at first:

1. Orange County, CA
2. Cox Cable Preferred
3. 7MB/512
4. Motorola SB5101
5. vt1005v
6. See below...right now Modem --- Router --- Vonage
7. Dropped service
8. This test was run by a PC connected directly to the router and not to the Vonage. In fact, now that I've posted, my Vonage won't come back online and I'll probably have to cycle everything.

My Results
Download 5,157,664 bps
Upload 519,656 bps
QOS 81%
RTT 80 ms
MaxPause 73 ms

I'll try to make this as brief as possible. I've been a Vonage customer for over 3 years and since my most recent move my service has been so maddening that I'm not sure how much longer I can take it.

Previously, my setup was this:

Timewarner RoadRunner Cable Modem --- Vonage Motorola vt1005v ATA --- D-Link DI-524

This worked pretty well, and when the service would go out (more often than I'd like), I would unplug the vt1005v, wait 15-20 seconds, plug it back in and go.

Since my move I am now with Cox. My setup WAS this:

Cox Motorola SB5101 --- vt1005v --- DI-524

But I was having problems with dropped service, call quality, etc. I decided to buy a new router with QoS, etc. I bought the D-Link DIR-625 and it was worthless, I couldn't ever get it to work.

So I purchased a Linksys WRT54GS. I currently have it setup, and would like to keep it, like this:

Motorola SB5101 ---- WRT54GS ---- vt1005v

I did that so I could use the QoS features, port forwarding is easier, etc. The QoS won't do me much good if the vt1005v is in front of the router, will it?

Well, this setup has been fantastic for internet. I think mostly due to the router, but my speeds are great.

I have setup the Vonage to get highest priority QoS both with MAC address and based on the port it's plugged into on the router. I have also tried setting a static IP for the Vonage and forwarding ports 5061 and 10000-20000 (read that somewhere else).

Now, every call is dropped after about 30 seconds, which also resets my Cox cable modem and basically drives me insane.

I have spent hours searching for a solution and trying different ones, but nothing works correctly. I haven't called Vonage because my previous attempts at that are long-lasting and unsatisfying.

Please, someone, help Cry

I turned off the Static IP on the vt1005v and turned off the port forwarding. I did change the QoS setting to "DISABLE" on the flow control for the port where the Vonage is plugged in on my router.

Made a call and it didn't disconnect, so we'll see how long this lasts.

I am a newbie so forgive me. Have you played with the Vonage bandwidth saver feature? I have a really fast Internet connection but I still have troubles using the fastest 90 speed. I think I have mine on 30 now, possibly 50.On 90 I would lose dialtone randomly.Once I turned things down, I havent lost dialtone in a couple of days.

The only time lately I have had any issues was when I was maxing out my upload speeds with Bit Torrent. I could hear the person I called just fine but they were not hearing me right.Said I sounded wavy and were not hearing every few words. I even had Qos set to low for all protocols but Voice. It still effected things. As long as I dont max out my connection, things are fine.

Sometimes I have knocked the phone offline with heavy torrenting and had to reboot the router. Now I know not to be careless with my torrenting. I was experimenting to see how much it would take to mess up things. Normal people wouldnt try to stress things the way I was.

I am using the Linksys WRTP54G Vonage router. I originally purchased the Linksys PAP adaptor but they sent me the wireless router instead for the cheaper price. I hear that Linksys PAP adapter works well. Its nice cause its not a router. It just connects to a free ethernet port on your existing router or switch. I hooked one up for a customer and he hasnt complained since. Sometimes that is what I wish I would have gotten.Especially since I bought a nice Buffalo Wireless MIMO router with a signal amplifier built in. Now that I got this Linksys router and got the firmware flashed, all my troubles are gone.

Good luck.....

How did it go? I have the exact same problem after moving my PAP2 behind a WRT54G, had no problem with the PAP2 in front for 2 years but Internet quality was bad so I swapped them.

I have PAP2 set with a static IP, QoS enabled on the WRT with PAP2 port set to highest, DMZ to PAP2 address and even port forwarding for UDP 10000-20000.

I'm also in OC with Cox and have the same service you have. I have had Vonage for over 2 years here and have not had any issues so far (other than the most recent big outage).

Motorola SB5120

D-Link DIR-655--->Netgear GS605
|
Linksys RTP300

The DIR-655 has QoS, and I have not touched any of the default settings. I get these results currently when running the Voip test with my laptop connected to the GS605:

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 7112368 bps
Upload speed: 515496 bps
Quality of service: 94 %

Minimum round trip time to server: 88 ms

It's working now. The only changes I did were to perform a reset of the RT31P2 by holding the reset button for 30s and I set it to get its Internet IP address via DHCP from my WRT54G.

On the WRT54G I have the following settings:

- DMZ: Disabled
- Port Range Forward: UDP 10000-20000 to IP of RT31P2
- QoS: Enabled, Highest for IP address of RT31P2
