I have a Vonage account and the Linksys RT31P2 which works well. I would like to take Vonage with me when I travel in the U.S. Because of the way it is wired into my system, taking the ATA out and then reinstalling it would be a hassle. Can I purchase (like thru Best Buy) a Linksys PAP2 and have it configured with the same phone and account number? Then I wouldn't have a problem when I want to travel with it?
Thanks,

Hmm, I don’t think so. That would be like “cloning”, which could lead to abuse... |

You can.. however.. use a softphone with your account (if you have a hardphone account).... just need to put the sip settings in.
Then, just disconnect your Vonage box (do you have to??), and fire up your soft phone and you'll be ready to go.*
* WARNING: These statements have not been compared to Vonage TOS and may violate them. I'm simply stating that a softphone WOULD work with your hardphone account... however, if it's legal as far as Vonage is concerned, I don't know. |

Thanks for the info guys, although I don't like the answers. Vonage touts as a service feature the ability to pick up your ATA and bring it with you. While I can disconnect everything, I do have 3 pc's in a small home network that currently make use of the router function of my ATA. I've tried to make my rats nest of wiring look professional (make that neat), so getting to and from the equipment is more than I would normally want to do.
Oh well. |

Well the other option you could try... is get a $40 dlink router (or something) and use that to route instead of your Voip box... you might not get qos.. but unless you're doing major downloading that shouldn't be a huge issue (that's how I do it now).
So I only have 1 wire going to and from my ATA...
I never did like boxes that combine things...
I have a netgear router... a linksys switch and then the ATA... each device does it's own job and does it well..
None of this cable modem/router/switch junk hehehe |

Matth: That's worth a try. I do have a Linksys router I took out of circulation when I received the Vonage gear. I didn't want to have 2 routers daisy chained together. so I removed my original and replaced it. For some reason, I thought one had to actually daisy chain the router (one to the other). I wasn't aware that it would work with a single ethernet cable coming in.
Thanks, |

You just plug your ATA WAN port into a switch on the other router.
You MAY need to open the sip ports 5000-5060 ? (I think that's not quiet correct).. I didn't have to and my phone still works.... Vonage can give you the port numbers to open if you need them. |
