yeah, but they wouldn't even need to hash anything. filename = phone number.txt. no lookup, just open the file.
But it doesn't scale effectively, as the file system overhead would be enormous. You have to find the file, open it, and parse through it. Parsing flat text files is not efficient. (which is one reason why relational databases were invented) And I should also note, from a development standpoint, it's just as easy to write code that reads/writes to a database as it is to make code that creates/reads/writes text files. (actually, coding to the DB is
easier
)
A database is far more efficient at searching through huge data sets (as long as the data is properly indexed), is easier to manage, and scales much better.
By the way, just because there is not a database lookup does not mean there isn't
some
lookup. The file system itself is a database of sorts. Files get stored, indexed, queried, written, etc., and file system overhead is not insigificant-- especially in an application where large numbers of files are being constantly opened & read (for each phone call that comes in to
Vonage
's network).

Is this feature still being tested?
The sign up page does not seem to be working?

Dunno.... not enough hours in my day to test alpha-version releases, so I never tried it. When I read the description, it really didn't thrill me.
Seriously, though...... I just cannot BELIEVE they haven't implemented something as basic as selective call blocking yet.
They offer a large and useful feature set, yet something as useful and basic as Selective Call Blocking is remarkably absent and nobody (except customers) seems to care.
If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

It is too bad
Vonage
has dropped the ball on Selective Call blocking, especially since Contact Book would be easy to set up, since GrandCentral is using it for over 2 years.
Here is a new link for Contact Book

Works fine for me. Does not require a sgn up, just put your user name and password in the sign-on fields.
BTW, I wpould not be surpised if
Vonage
discontinues contact book and
vonage
talk (both of the reasons I am a BIG supporter of
Vonage
) as the combination of the two encompass
Vonage
Pro.
