Hello,
I just started using Vonage two days ago and I am having problems receiving and making calls to a regular non-vonage landline. When I call a number that is not Vonage I cannot hear it ring but the call goes through. When the person picks up they cannot hear me and I cannot hear them. When someone calls me the same thing happens, my phone rings but I cannot hear them nor can they hear me. If anyone else has had this problem and figured out how to fix it I would greatly appreciate the heads up. Below is the information on my equipment and network. I am also pasting a copy of the Voip test I ran. Thanks for the help.

I have had the same issue, but just recently. I use a wireless internet connection on my laptop and the Voip adapter is wired to the ethernet port. It uses Windows Internet Connection sharing to supply connection to phone.

I have the same symptoms, I can receive a call (the phone rings), when I answer I cannot hear anything. Next when I try to call out, I get a dial tone, I can hear it dialing, but then nothing.

Each time, whether receiving or sending a call, I notice that my Wireless internet connection drops (the icon changes to red X) and it reconnects shortly after I hang up the phone. I have contacted Vonage via email, but they have nothing for me as of yet.

I am no expert but those jitter times do not look good. the 164ms/16ms is pretty high considering mine is 2ms/8ms.

Your other specs look alright.

I am new with Vonage.

Have you tried setting your bandwidth saver to 30kbps instead of the default 50kbps. Mine is set on 90kbps but I dont hear any difference than when I had it set to 30kbps.

If your jitter times stay high, try rebooting your modem, then your Vonage adaptor. From time to time my modem slows down and my QOS drops but rebooting everything restores everything. It dont seem to affect the phone but my Internet seems slow.

Is your Vonage adapter connected BEHIND a router? If so, you may need to setup port forwarding.

Very good point. Please describe your setup in greater detail. Is that a DSL modem or a cable modem. More details please.

You're using Hughes net? As in Satellite? I'll be surprised it you EVER get a good quality call. One of the biggest factors in Voip quality is the time it takes for data to travel from your phone to the remote caller's phone. For instance, I ping Vonage servers from my home I get a round trip time of around 20ms. And my data is traveling from Denver to NJ, save a few twists and turns by the various ISPs along the way. You on the other hand are sending the data to SPACE, and BACK! That's not a short trip hence your VERY high round trip time and poor jitter, etc. in the test.

Realize that 2582ms is more than 2.5 seconds. That's how long it is taking your data to travel round trip (on average).

Get another ISP (if available), or scrap the Voip idea.

He probably has no other choice as thats the reason for the satellite. My old place, my next door neighbor who shared my driveway had cable. My driveway crossed railroad tracks and the cable company refused to run a cable line to the house. My neighbor wasnt much more than 300 feet from my place. And DSL wasn't available so it was dialup or satellite.I couldn't afford the satellite. Then I moved.

I didn't realize it was a satellite. If you are an online gamer then they do not recommend a satellite connection because of the lag time. I dont know if it would help or not but I suggest setting the bandwidth saver to 30. With bandwidth saver set to 30 on the Vonage dashboard in the features section and do not use the Internet whle on the phone and you may get lucky. In my opinion, you really need more upload speed and much less lag.

Also, he says these are his specs:that upload is just a bit faster than dialup isnt it???? That is a problem too isnt it????
Download speed: 426704 bps (426k down)
Upload speed: 59784 bps (59k up)

Keep in mind that I am just a Vonage newbie. I am a Network guy however for a living.

Yeah, everything about his test results is bad, except that no packet loss, but at that speed there will be packet errors. And you're right the upload is not enough to support the G711u Codec (highest bandwidth setting). But even at G729a (lowest) there will be major problems.

That's why I said "Get another ISP (if available), or scrap the Voip idea."
