Hi,

My Question is that I use a Linksys Router connected to only 1 computer. I don't have a server or running a network or anything. I'm just using the Linksys router Model# BEFSR41 for the built in firewall capabilities. So sincve the router is already a firewall. My question is do I really need the Vonage built in firewall that is enabled by default in the settings. Will disabling that mess up my connection in any way? Do you think disabling The builkt in firewall and nat will make my connection faster when surfing the net or raise my kilobytes per second in any way Like when I download large files or when I go into file sharing programs like winmx. I have windows Vista Home premium Comcast as my cable provider I pay around 59 dollars a month if anyone can figure out what the cable company gives me for bandwidth. Is there any settings at all in my Vonage settings that would or have been know in your experience to increase a person's throughput speed going from 1 website to another. The Model number for my Vonage adapter is (VT2142- VD)
I hear that a lot of the techs recommend having a spereate router because the Vonage devices are good devices, but not so good routers.

Well thanks so much for your time

Steven

Nothing you do on your Vonage router will give you an increased bandwidth.

Also since you are asking I'm guessing that you are connecting your PC to the Vonage router. I recommend that you connect your PC to the BEFSR41 and let the Vonage router just serve as a phone device.

Hi The way I have my setup is I have my blue ethernet cable going from my cable modem to the internet port on the back of my router. Then I have a blue cable going from the blue port on my Vonage device to port 1 on the back of my router. Then I have another blue cable plugged into port 2 on the back of my routerand that one is going to my ethernet port on the back of my computer I have nothing plugged into the yellow port on the back of my Vonage device since my router already has the extra ports. Also I'm not sure if you know anything about bridging a connection using 2 nic cards but that's what I'm doing I have an onboard intel nic on my motherboard not a gigabyte nic and I have another stand alone in my pci slot not a gigabyte either. So I'm briging the 2 to give me double the speed.I'm not really sure if I'm getting double the speed or not but it's not hurting anything. I wonder if going to a gigabyte ethernet card as a stand alone would give me some increased kilobytes per second? Especially when I go to file sharing sites like winmx? So I have another cable plugged into the 3rd port on my router going to the ethernet port on the back of my stand alone nic card. Thanks

Steve

OK. It shounds like you have Vonage device setup as people here recommend.

I respect your persistence, but the dual NIC setup isn't going to get you more download bandwidth, let alone double it.

Your bandwidth limits are controlled by the cable company via the modem. It isn't your hardware setup that is the limiting factor.

The dual NIC setup won't hurt anything and would probably give you better bandwidth within your on local network, but its not going to speed up downloads, etc, from the internet.

Switching to a standalone gigabype ethernet card isn't going to bump things up either.

Keep in mind your download bandwidth from the cable company is probably somewhere between 5MB and 10MB. This is only 5% to 10% of what a single 100mb ethernet card can accomodate. This is why all of the things you are looking at won't help.
