I was in Mexico this summer and stayed with a couple of friends that had rented a house in San Miguel de Allende. The people that rented out the house had set it up with Vonage, and it worked great.

ha, well things have changed. I was going to suggest a solution that is used in some middle east regions that solves the ISP block on Voip

Okay, so how do i go about setting it up in Mexico? Voip signal or SIP is routed via the USA? You would need to sign up to an extra service

or

will it work right away??

The setup at the house where I stayed seemed pretty normal. It had a high speed Internet connection and wireless router pretty much the same as what I have in my own house. I didn't investigate it that much it, but it worked well. It had an Oregon number I believe. I don't think they had to do anything special to get it working. Just plug it in like we do here. Now different ISPs could do different things when it comes to Voip in Mexico. My experience is just limited to that one area.

It will work right away. Nothing extra is needed. Provided that you have a broadband connection in Mexico. It works exactly the same as if you are in the US. Just plug your Vonage adapter into DSL or Cable connection and you are ready to go. I have been using Vonage in Mexico for over a year and I have used three different ISPs, including Telmex, with no problems.

You can use your Vonage adapter in Mexico with no problems, though it depends on your internet connection and the device you have.

I live in Mexico and use my Vonage line every day to talk to my sister in California...she has a regular land line and I have a number with her area code so it's a local call for her. My ISP is Prodigy Infinitum, DSL. Supposedly my ISP blocks Voip, but with my Vonage Linksys router I have no problems. I DID however have problems with another Vonage phone adapter that worked fine in the US and Spain...a DLINK. I never did figure out exactly why that device didn't work with my ISP. Maybe it could detect it was a Voip phone adapter and it couldn't detect the Linksys is one....

Anyway, happy calling!

Another success story in Mexico - we have had our Vonage device set up here for 2+ years with few issues. Currently it is running thru Prodigy Infinitum (TelMex)...we've found they have much less of a latency problem than our cable provider (MegaCable).

There seem to be 2 general problems that we've had - Telmex has very little actual upstream bandwidth (they advertise 128-256, but you usually can't get more than 130 or so) and so if you are sharing the connection, callers on the other end may notice choppiness.

Also every month or so, whatever circuit that Telmex uses to connect to the US goes down - you'll be able to access sites in Mexico fine, but your Voip and any american sites won't function. Unfortunately this seems to affect both of our providers, probably because somewhere along the line the cable company is using Telmex for transport.
