I signed us up for Vonage a month ago. we have cable thru mediacom, so i have their mdem,an old netgear router and he pap2. we ahve had deent calls, but every time we are on a call, at ome point in time we get the little chops everyone else has experienced.
Last night i went a bouht the linksys cable modem/router, thinking that is was my old router and the modem causing the trouble. well, the first call I made was fine, but i got another frutrated call from my wife this morning, complaining again, begging me to switch back.
Anyone have any suggesions i can try? i am careful not to be doing an uploads of stuff when we are on the phone, keep the bandwidth setting at 50, but it really doesn't seem to matter. I love this concept, but am afraid the wife is going to win in the long run.
i did the test at testmyvoip and the core was a 3.6 FIW
Thanks for your help |

Don't think of it as You vs. Her for Voip. It shouldn't be personal.
For the first 3 weeks of our Vonage service, call quality was excellent, then things went downhill. I had a cable tech come out and test the line, it tested "within spec". Two days later I had them replace the cable modem. I as still having poor call quality. Speedtests from speedtest.charter.com and Broadband reports would showed unreliable speed. Sometimes 2.7Mbps/260k sometimes 37k/40k. Yes, 37/40!
Turned out that I had a bad Netgear Router. That's all it was. Call quality has been great since I removed it.
Try more troubleshooting, but if you can't fix it, you should also agree that you've done all you could, it's just not going to replace a landline.
Voip is "cool". But there are a lot of technologies out there that are cool, but don't justify replacing proven technology.
Good luck troubleshooting. Hopefully you'll figure it out.
Oh, try http://bandwidthplace.com for their speedtest. I subscribed for $11.88/yr so I could run tests over and over again while troubleshooting. I'll run tests periodically to see how my connection is. |
