Hello, I am about to sign up for Vonage and have pretty much decided on signing up with a vongage number and trying out service for few weeks. If I keep it I would port over my Verizon landline and hope to replace the Vonage number I have been using for testing.

About a month or two after that my mother will be moving back to my house and here is my question. Will I (or she) be able to port her landline number over to my Vonage account. She currently has a single landline, no DSL or anything, in her own name at her address. She will be moving far enough away that the number will not be in the same local exchange as my house currently is in, so I don't think the phone company can switch it over here (before we go with Vonage that is).

I "asked" Vonage customer service today the same question, and the operator ran both numbers and confirmed they are portable (i ran this prior to call on site and confirmed), but i'm not so sure she fully understood my real question. Her words were it "probably" would work... I have read some horror stories about porting numbers on here and have a hard time sleeping well with probably.

I have been thinking maybe we could put both names on the Vonage account, or her existing landine account to possibly make it easier, but dont know if I, its possible, or 2 it will help. If anyone has had a similar situation and had it work your advise or confirmation will be greatly appreciated.

My understanding is that the names have to match. I would suggest that you or your mother (whoever the service is listed) call the land line provider and ask how to "port" the number (since the names are not exact).

Hope this helps.

Just an update, and hopefully this will help someone else down the road.

I have just successfully completed a LPN transfer to Vonage from a verizon landline account that was in a different name and address then my Vonage account. (same situation I described above in earlier post). You need to make sure you that you have the other account holder with you, or have their information and permission before you go through the "add a line" setup process. The only thing to make sure you do is where Vonage tells you to change your account name/address info (ON THE LPN FORM you fill out online) you make sure every name and address you use on the form matches the landline account you are transferring, including the 'signature' line. Thats why I recommend having the other person there or filling it out since you are basically submitting the request for Vonage to obtain their number on the other account holders behalf.

I never had to change my actual Vonage account info, or have the other account holder update any addresses or names on their Verizon account. The porting process worked as normal after that. Below is the LPN info. I do not know why there were two entries for carrier approved transfer, but the first time it said approved, they had the completion date 2/21, then I guess they re adjusted it to 2/25 the second entry. It took 8 days to transfer, including weekends.

FYI the number was a Verizon landline in Virginia area code 540
