I have DSL line on my phone number which I want to port to Vonage. They are not able to port it because it has DSL line on it. If I cancel my line then the number cannot be ported as it is AT&T number. I cannot install another line as there is provision of only one phone line and at&t is charging $125 for extra jack which I don't want as I need only one line at the end.
Could anyone advise me how to do this so that I can retain my number without paying extra
Note: My community does not have Cable service |

did you check first if Vonage can transfer your number to the network? there are other reasons why your number can't be transferred, like there is no local exchange carrier in your location. do check and if it is transferrable, you need to set-up a stand-alone dsl with att, which they now offer, so that should free up your phone line for transfer without causing any interruptions or problems. if you do need to add additional wiring, you can call up tech support and check on the prices for professional install (and hope the fee can be waived). good luck! |

I did check and they said that this number can be transfered to them. After that I placed the order with them. I think because it has DSL line on this number they are not able to transfer it. I am sure there would be some alternatives but not able to think of one right now |

I also had this concern, as I had Cavalier phone and DSL, but Vonage said no problem. I called Cavalier, and they also said no problem, so I went ahead and switched. My number is still being ported, so I can let you know by the end of the week if it was successful. |

Just as an update, my DSL was indeed cut off They said that my phone and DSL were a bundle, so once I disconnected the phone, they disconnected my DSL too. I was without internet for a full week and a half
Anyway, I now have cable, so its a bit faster anyway |

Here is the email I got from Vonage regarding the transfer of my number from the line with DSL on it.
Dear Valued Vonage Customer,
Thank you for requesting to transfer your number to Vonage. Unfortunately, we have been advised by your current phone company that there is an issue that is preventing the transfer to Vonage. The below issue needs to be addressed in order to transfer your number. DSL high-speed Internet is currently associated with the number you wish to transfer. You will need to remove this feature in order to proceed with transferring your phone number. Please keep in mind that if you remove your DSL service from this line, you will need to establish DSL service on another line with your phone company or establish broadband service with another broadband provider, such as Cable Internet, in order to use Vonage service. In order to resolve this issue, we suggest that you :
Call your current phone company and request that DSL be removed from the line you wish to transfer and placed on another line. Confirm with your phone company that your account has been updated to reflect the change by getting a confirmation number. Call us with the confirmation number. Please call us toll-free at: 1-866-243-4357 (1-VONAGE-HELP) and select the Number Transfer option. Once DSL is removed from your line and we receive the confirmation number, we can continue with your number transfer. Please do ensure that you retain a broadband Internet connection with either DSL or Cable Internet so that you will be able to use the Vonage broadband phone service. Please call us within 7 days or your number transfer request will be cancelled, and your temporary Vonage number will become your permanent number. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter so that we may process your request in the quickest manner possible. Thank you for choosing Vonage for your phone service. And please remember that you can use your Vonage service in the meantime with your temporary number to start getting the benefit of saving on your long distance calls. Sincerely, Vonage Customer Care
So, I just ordered the new land-line which I have to wait until 01/23/08 to have activated. Then I have to transfer my DSL to it. Then I have to complete the number transfer of my original number to Vonage. Once complete I have to call ATT to convert my new line to Naked DSL, Dry Loop DSL, or DSL Direct or whatever term will get it done. All of this just to have my original land-line number transferred to Vonage.
I think Vonage should advertise "best used with Cable broadband".
What a pain. |

Yeah, I investigated that all before signing up again. I had an ongoing email "conversaton" with Vonage regarding what happens if I do have DSL on the line. Now I know!
I had Vonage since 2003 so we could call France cheap then "free" as part of the unlimited plan. I cancelled it because I couldn't justify the expense of the land-line and Vonage. I had a Vonage fax line too but could never send or receive (mostly receive) faxes. Support couldn't help either. I tried it with 2 different machines.
After discovering that I could indeed get the dry loop I'm back.
I also recently transferred my office over to Vonage. That was easy because we have a regular fax line that has the DSL on it. It'll stay since we share it with another company. |
