So...I used to be with SBC Ameritech back in 2003. I transferred my phone number over to Vonage and everything has been working fine for the past 4 years. This weekend my customers start e-mailing me stating that my number isn't working.

After going round and round with Vonage support they tell me that my number was never transferred and that I would have to call SBC Ameritech to get them to release the number.

So I call SBC Ameritech, which is now ATT and they tell me that Vonage would have to call them to fix it AND they can't tell me who if anyone owns it due to privacy issues.

This is a NIGHTMARE. I have advertising and other collateral with my phone #'s on it and have spent a ton of money...now there is a change I might lose this number?

clarification, you've been with Vonage for 4yrs now right? and you've been able to receive calls using your Vonage number, which was ported in from sbc right? to confirm if you have the same acct did as with the Vonage records, have them pull up your billing invoices for the previous months. it should show your Vonage number (hopefully the one you've been using). once you've isolated this, try to get a tech rep based in NJ to look into your problems.

That is correct. I had 123-456-7890 with SBC. I then switched to Vonage and have been using 123-456-7890 since September of 2003. That is until last Friday when I stopped being able to receive incoming calls...

...also...here is a little update. While my number was being ported 4 years ago they gave me a temp # as they do everyone. So..when I check on the transfer status in my Vonage account it NOW says that the transfer was cancelled 4 years ago and that my temp # is now my permanent #. So...I tried calling my temp # and someone else answers. Go figure.

that is so weird. i'm assuming all this time you already disconnected your service with sbc and you've never received any bills from them. so if this is so, you're no longer with sbc and you're not using the 123-456-7890 # with Vonage, so who has been your provider for teh past 4yrs? Rolling Eyes
what you can do is to speak to an acct mgr, they're the ones who have more pull and can get you to the right people who can assist you. they're also the right people to give you credits re all the hassle you've experienced. hope this will work out well soon.

UPDATE: Well...it's official. I have lost my number. Just tried calling it today and it rings to another business.

After 4 years and countless hundreds of dollars...my number no longer belongs to me.

Any attorneys lurking in here?
