Try your Vonage device between the cable modem and the router.

This should prioritize your Voip over the network computers.

I don't see how to do that. The Vonage adapter only has an input jack and no output jacks. There is no way to plug into the modem and then out to the router. And the modem only has one jack, so I can't directly plug both my wireless router and Vonage adapter into the modem.

Make sense?

Right. You can't do that with a PAP2. However, you should be able to set QoS in the wireless router to favor the PAP2, and that's the first thing to try.

However, you also appear to have a serious issue with packet loss. Try temporarily removing the WRT and plugging your computer directly into the modem. Re-run the test. If it gets a lot better, then we need to look at the WRT. If it doesn't, then you have an ISP issue.

If you're using a cordless phone, replace it with a corded phone until you've run any problems to ground. If it's a 2.4 GHz cordless and you want to continue to use a wireless router, then you'll probably have to replace the phone permanently.

The same thing started happening to me Wednesday evening. I have a Linksys WRT54G router. If I plug my Vonage device directly into my cable modem, I get excellent service. Back in the router, and I get choppy service. So I'd suspect it's a problem with your router. Not sure what to do about it though. If you find out, let me know! Smile

Edit: I also tried setting the QoS to highest for the router, and can't tell that it made any difference. So probably a question for Linksys tech support.

what version WRT are you all using?

The reason I ask is newer versions (V. 5+) of the WRT are worthless to say the least. Older versions are excellent (v. 1-4 I believe), and could even have 3rd party firmware added to them. That would take a 40.00 router and turn it into a 290.00 router with excellent QoS.

If it is a new WRT (v.5+) take it back or throw it away. Fire may be appropriate as well. Sunny Side Up Applause The PAP2T is an excellent device though.

brian188: I have a v8. I don't know that I would go so far as to say it's worthless, but I do agree they used to be better. I also have a v1.1 that died recently. I can tell just looking at it that it's higher quality.

Sorry to hear that. Yeah v1.1 was an awesome router. They shouldn't even be able to call the v8 a WRT, it is a completely different router.

Have you tried placing the ATA in the DMZ? You can start there and see if there is any improvement in call quality.

My WRT54GS is version 1.1. How (exactly) do I place the ATA in the DMZ? I don't know what that means? Does that apply to my PAP2 Vonage adapter?

Log in to your router. On the Applications & Gaming tab, select the DMZ subtab. Check enable, and enter the IP address of your Vonage device.

BTW, I discovered that it was only the power supply of my v1.1 that died. I plugged in the power supply from the v8, and it worked fine! So now I'm planning to get a power supply for the v1.1 and return the v8 (I've only had it for about 2.5 weeks). Switching back to the v1.1 eliminated all the problems with the choppy sound. Very Happy
